That's a good CPU. Be sure to pick up a new board as well.

No need for a board like that at this budget. Get a cheaper B150/H110/H170 and save your self the money.

You're better off with a B150 or a H170. The extra price of the Z170 isn't worth it unless you have an unlocked (overclockable) CPU.

z170 boards could be used for faster memory to reduce CPU bottlenecks a bit, you should try getting the i5 6500 with a b150/h170 instead, it would probably be around the same speed of a 6400 with 3000mhz memory on a z170

OP - the 6400 is a nice cpu but if you can afford a z170 then you could get a b150 and the i5 6500

you could get a z170 board and overclock it to 4.4ghz as 2.7ghz is really really slow.

People trying to recommend an i5 6500 over the 6400, when the 4 core boost speed difference is only 200mhz. Then thinking 200mhz will make as much of a difference as a memory overclock, which has been proven to boost minimum FPS by 10-20% depending on amount of CPU overhead. I am highly disappointed x.x

If you can afford a Z series board and faster memory, go with that. The 6500 has worse price:performance than the 6400. All 4 cores will boost to 3100mhz on the 6400, and all 4 cores will only boost to 3300mhz on the 6500. 200mhz clock speed (less than 10% more clock speed) for $20 more (10% more money) equates to bad price:performance. Let's also not forget that 10% more clock speed does not translate to 10% more performance, because scaling is never that linear.

A stronger chipset (which promotes better upgrade paths in the future) and faster ram is a better option for that extra $20 to be spent. Even if you cannot afford faster ram XMP kits, just spend the extra $20 on a Z170 board, and manually overclock any cheap DDR4 kit to 2800mhz. Such a clock speed is easy to achieve on pretty much any kit, and is more than enough to notice an improvement in performance.

Huh. I don't do Skylake, I just remember all the hub-ub about it, and then someone saying it was dead because of microcode update. I am probably mistaken.

Carry on.

You are right, the difference between an h170 and a z170 is not much in price and gives me better upgrade paths. For the CPU it self i think that the only upgrade that makes sense above the 6400 would be the 6600 that is out of budget.
