No Alienware is overpriced. Do you need a computer that can be easily portable or could you go with a desktop?

Thats not a very good laptop, to be precise not what he wants. Performance is an issue with that.

To be honest, a skylake i7, a 980m, 16gb RAM, 256GB SSD & 1TB HDD is pretty nice for that price point, you won't get that for lower. It's also depending on what you like (outside), if you like the style of the alienware, I'd say, go for it

That Alienware is good for the price, hardly see Alienwares come this low in terms of pricing. Go for it if you want. Too bad no G-Sync tho.
