If I plan on expanding when able would it be better to buy a rack than a desktop style server?

Well, yes. But it'll be more expensive unless you buy mostly (or all) used parts.

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Looking to start a small scale webhosting service, and maybe a few vps slots, from my house (gigabit internet).

Not really sure what to look for with my small budget.

you could try some old decommissioned server hardware, large amounts of ddr2 ECC is damn cheap

dual lga 771 xeons would be a good platform, these mobos are also very cheap

If I instead of going with webhosting and did minecraft servers, would ddr2 instead of ddr3 effect performance?

Look on ebay for a dell r610. They are very powerful, yet they are inexpensive.

Something like this?

This seems like a really good deal though I'd prefer buying from amazon.

You wont find deals like that on amazon. Savemyserver is a VERY reputable seller, and I have bought multiple servers from them.

My friend used to work there and he gave me a coupon code to get the lowest price they're allowed to sell at, will probably be getting one soon.

Do you have to use the latest architecture? If not, and you dont mind buy everything used, maybe this will work (prices are CNY converted to USD, may differ from place to place)

  • CPU: Intel Xeon X3330 ($30)
  • MoBo: Asus P5BV/C ($30)
  • RAM: 4x 2GB DDR2-667 ECC ($10 total)
  • PSU: 450W ($10)
  • Case: ATX case ($5)
  • RAID card: LSI 9260-8i with BBU ($150 max)
  • SSD: 4x Kingston V300 240GB (buy new) ($200)

Total: $435, and you get a passable server with 720GB of redundant SSD storage.
