Which one is better for both gaming and rendering? Gtx 970 or r9 390, first off I need a card that I can smoothly play games on like fallout 4, h1z1 but I also need a good one for recording, rendering etc. I have already recorded the gtx 970 but could ship it back for the r9 390. Any thoughts?

Graphics cards help very little with rendering.

So it's just a matter of personal choice, with no right/wrong answer.

they can help a lot but there isnt that much difference between the 970 and 390

cpu is more important when it comes to rendering as the cpu is used more..

you can set the gpu as the primary rendering processor and the gpu can do it faster than a cpu

i still don't see the problem with the 970

like i told him the difference between a 970 and a 390 isnt really great enough to justify exchanging the 970 if he already has one

Rendering is cpu task, gpu is of little help here. In rare cases where you would benefit from gpu, it's usually done via cuda, which works on nvidia only.

You might also want to check how much vram usage are you hitting, since the 970 only has 3.5GB of effective vram, while the r9 390 has 8GB, but for current titles. But keep in mind that this will only come handy with very detailed texture packs, so if you're not going to use those or game at huge resolutions, you don't really need that much vram.

I will eventually turn over since high resolution monitors are getting cheaper and cheaper, but I also want to know about shadowplay and recording what/how is amd's equivalent?
