I have just ordered a PC for gaming and video editing with 32GB of RAM. When I told my friends about the purchase, they said that I went completely overboard and wasted my money because RAM doesn't help for video editing, only the CPU does, which got me thinking. Are they right? Or does RAM actually help? I've always heard that RAM helps but I am asking here just to be sure. Thanks in advance.

I would get 16GB to be on the safe side because you are gaming and you could squeeze out the same performance that 32gb's would give also it would be cheaper.

For video editing you'd really want a 5820k and those 2 are at a very similar price point.

but if he's a real baller he'd get 2xE5-2670 and a dual socket 2011 mobo, cpus: 75$ (ebay) a piece :o 8 cores 16 threads @2.6 Ghz per cpu :o dual socket 2011 mobo's are expensive though, 300$+

32 GB of ecc ddr3 = 66$ (ebay)

gaming performance would degrade but editing performance would go up a ton :)

Cool, The CPU will matter for performance but having the 32gb ram will be nice so your system doesn't keel over as its ran out of steam.

So what I was going to say is when you choose which program you will use you can benefit from the GPU helping with rendering. For example Sony Vegas can do some GPU rendering as well as PPRO.

Highly unlikely unless you're sat with 4GB.

Nice, no hiccups?

Not really, no. It struggles with anything too big but it can output some nice 1080p60fps videos.
