More vram less system ram it uses?

DRsmorn

Hello,

I came across a topic that if you have more vram on your graphic card the less system ram it uses. Is this true?

technically yes

if your vram is insufficient, your games your use your system memory as vram

but by then you have more issues to worry about than your vram

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

you still need to have enough system memory

Video memory (VRAM) is a complete separate entity from system memory (RAM).

It is used by, and only, the GPU. RAM is used by the CPU.

Consider the graphics card as the mini complete PC...within your PC

  • Own processing cores (either CUDA or Stream Processors)
  • Own memory -- VRAM
  • Own circuit board
  • Own power (i.e. PCI-E connections)
  • Own heatsink

But what if you have more vram does it replace not having enough ram in games.

Mostly no, since RAM being used for video memory is not an desirable scenario and mostly should be avoided.

Not really, since in most scenarios the graphics card won't use system RAM at all. You can't use less than zero. The graphics card only uses system RAM when the VRAM is completely full. That's the only situation in which having more VRAM would decrease system RAM usage.

To add to what Glenwin said, A card using GDDR memory won't use system memory at all.  The application might, though.  The only time the GPU would really "congest" system memory is if it was a card using DDR memory.  These are cards meant for office work over graphics work.

A 280x isn't really going to use any system memory since the 280x uses GDDR5.  The, "VGA GeForce 210 Passive 1024 MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 DVI/HDMI/VGA Graphics Card, 01G-P3-1313-KR", on the other uses DDR3 over GDDR3-GDDR5.  Yes, there is DDR5 too.  Non-G DDR cards use system memory, so the 210 "could" feast away at system memory.  However, that's only about a gig.

No, whether VRAM is DDR3 or GDDR5 doesn't matter, it's still a dedicated pool of memory that the graphics card can use. It only uses system memory when the VRAM is full.
