Hello,

I currently have a laptop: HP Envy 17 1050eb.

This is a great laptop but only 1 bad point: It only has integrated graphics.

I lookt a bit around and I found the EXP GDC Laptop External PCI-E Graphics Card.

I found somewhere it was compatible with the MSI GTX 750ti, Is this true?

Is this module compatible with my laptop?

I have a PCI-E slot but, I need to remove my wireless card, this is maybe a stupid question but, does my ethernet cable still works if i plug out the wireless card?

For the Graphics Card Hub, the MSI GTX 750ti is a low power consumer, without OC, it uses under 70W. Is it good enough to only use that 12vdc connector?

- Gilles

well, take this advice from another belgian: dont.

it'll turn your laptop into an immobile disaster, most of those gpu adapter things look fishy as hell, and pretty dang ugly, no one can guarantee it wont set stuff on fire, and so on.

one thing i can guarantee is that it'll probably void the hell out of your warranty.

oh, and i forgot to add, with the gpu docks you also need an external monitor.

that said, solution time:

keep your laptop as is, and instead of dunking around with chinese gpu docks and the like, do a summer/weekend job for a month or two, and build yourself a propper desktop, and when you want to couch game you just stream to your laptop.

1.It should

2.It will take any card that it can power. It has its own 6-pin and 8-pin PCIE output that will satisfy most cards.

3.If you need more power you can use an extra/external PSU

4.Yes

5.Should be fine

1. Ok

2. Do you think it will work, (Look at the image)?

3. Thanks

4.Nice.

trust me, one of those docks will make your laptop less handy to carry around than a desktop.

its not a set down and plug in thing, each time you want to plug it in or unplug you have to open up your laptop, and its a rats nest of cables once its set up properly.

600x600px-LL-2b6d4910_Lian_Li_PC-TU200_f

something like that combined with a monitor at both parents (TV?) and a not-oversized mouse and keyboard is a WAY better idea.

or, y'know, get a decent laptop.

to ellaborate on how un-portable your idea is:

53847.jpg

it'll be somewhat like that, except that the dock will be hardwired into your laptop.

to come back on those 70 watts, doesnt sound like much right? except you need a 6 amp 12 volt adapter to power it. (expect it to be not much smaller than the displayed PSU, if you want a decent one)

something not displayed here is the reason why the laptop is closed in the image: to make use of the external graphics card you need an external display as well, which is the final achilles heel in your plan.

or the pc stays at your mom's house when you're at dad's, and you use steam "in-home" streaming to game from your dad's.

it sounds silly, but if both sides have a decent connection (decent being more than the slowest plan available in belgium) you can actually do it pretty dang good.

oh, and a computer thats idle uses less than your fridge.

How would it set things on fire? As far as I can tell, all the power it gets is external. I can't 100% verify that my 970 won't blow up a motherboard, but should you automatically worry about it? No. There's always a chance something weird can happen.

That being said, I don't like external adapters anyways.

well, chinese power adaptors... you never know.

even if its rated above 70 watts, i sure as hell wont doubt that it falls in the "40% efficient pile" (which is sadly bigger than you think) which will make things probably get very toasty after long sessions.

besides, most of these things dont get tested beyond "plug it in for 10 seconds, does it work? okay, functional design, start mass production".

I would like to see someone objectively test these adapters to see if they're probably safe to use. I don't like automatically writing something off as "awful" without proper testing by someone.

well, you mentioned a wall adaptor for the power.

i have a whole tub of wall adaptors from vareous makes and devices, and most of them seem to be stuck around the 40% efficiency range.

which means for every watt you output, you also output 1.5 watt worth of heat into the adapter casing, meaning that for a 70 watt gpu, your power supply will generate roughly 100 watts worth of heat.

i dont have to explain that 100 watts is a lot, when a 70 watt card needs to be actively cooled.

Can you send a good adapter for that board?

There must be a good one...

I have to say though that reading through the ad, the translation is terrible, and is sketchy.

you should take a look at bigclovedotcom on youtube if you want to know what can go wrong with those.

he has taken apart a soldering iron where the mains power cable was just twisted onto the heating element, not even any form of solid mounting. a gentle tug made the power cord come clean off.
