Alright my room layout:

OPsEPBZ.png

Could I put the speakers like this.

Then back 2 the same way up near the roof. I will just run the wires through the attic above my room and then drive down for the wires. I also will be getting a 7.1 surround sound card (asus xoner)

Questions:

1. Is this all compatible?

2. Reviver suggestions?

3. Do I need anything else

you'd want HDMI or optical instead of that rca <> 1/8"

I don't know if the small speaker mounts will work(I don't mess with the small home theater speakers much), but they come in pairs.

if you plan to sit at the desk I would stick the speakers closer to the computer, as they will be way off axis in the upper corners of your room.

and I think it would be hard to get them to sound right they way the picture shows.

Will work for electronic components and parts

Alright to start you will want to place your front left and right speakers at equidistant from your center speaker and measure them so that they are also at equal arcs.

The other 2 surround speakers as best placed directly to the left and right of your listening position, i.e where you will be sitting. I'm not sure if this is viable in your room layout so you could also place them directly behind you, but make sure they face you. Then just place your sub on the floor by your monitor or TV, etc.

Here is a diagram *(Just replace the TV with your desk and the couch with your computer chair in the picture)*

2ducnic.jpg

Also for your price range I would go with a Denon receiver over that pioneer, something like AVR-E200, it's a great budget receiver for 5.1

http://usa.denon.com/us/product/pages/productdetail.aspx?pcatid=avsolutions(denonna)&catalog=denonna_us&catid=avreceivers(denonna)&pid=avre200(denonna)

I hope this was of some help :)

I am a noob to audio. The plan is to lay in bed and listen.

Alright then just put the 2 surround speakers to the left and right of your bed and angle them towards you. Keep the other two speakers equidistant as possible from each other and try to angle them appropriately.  Try to keep spacing between everything equal for best sound.

If you need help picturing this refer back to the diagram. *(replace coach with your bed)*.

is this for music or movies/tv?

i'm just thinking a stereo is way easier and cheaper to setup if it's for music, as 5.1 music recordings are rather rare.

1. Yes

2. Reviver? If you meant reciever, I would go with that Denon AVR-E200 I linked you

3. I don't think you so, though some other input would be good.

Like t0wer said what are you using this for. I wouldn't recommend a 5.1 for music.

I personally would only go with a surround setup for TV/Movies/Gaming, for music get a good pair of speakers and receiver and sub if you want. :)

inb4 t0wer recommends no sub - they're good in theory, but rarely in practice unless they're expensive.

I know that's why I said "and sub if you want", I don't use a sub, nor do I plan on investing in one in the foreseeable future

Also really digging your diagram haha :)

Nice pair of speakers and a good receiver would be best

If you want the best bang for your buck when buying a receiver check pawnshops, thrift stores, ebay, etc.

buying used is great, you can find great deals all the time.

There are tons of options for speakers but If I were buying new speakers I would get a pair of Polks or JBL's.

I got my Dad's old Polk's and for being over five years old they are still great :)

+1 on used speakers

OP should check out this other post I made for some eBay suggestions.

For sure, that was a great post definitely check it out. IF you can check out pawn shops in your area. I have the convenience of there being like 5 in a 30 mile radius of me for some reason so me and my dad always go down to them frequently and get great deals on tons of stuff from guitars, amps, speakers, receivers, etc.

A decent receiver with preferably an optical out

Denon AVR-E200:http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-E200-Channel-Through-Receiver/dp/B00B7X2OW6

Some RCA's of course to run from the speakers to the receiver, you can find these pretty much anywhere.

Also IF you want a sub(It's only considered 2.0 without sub, 2.1 with)

Check out this 10'' from Polk:http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-10-Inch-Monitor-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_y

*If you go with a sub run the speakers to the sub and then the sub to the subwoofer pre-out on the Denon AVR-E200.

All you'd need is something to drive them, like this little Lepai amp, and maybe some speaker wire and banana plugs if you don't have any already. I know the amp is cheap and small, but don't let that sway you.

Fine, the problem I have with the OP is:

You're only going to get surround sound into that receiver via HDMI or S/PDIF. This means you don't need those RCA to TRS cables.

  1. You have to use optical from sound card to receiver (the receiver doesn't have pre-amp inputs for the five channels... typically, only high end models do)  The xonar will properly encode sound for the receiver from movies/music/games.
  2. You'll need optical cable (choose your length, extra is good since you don't want to kink it.): http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901
  3. For the sub, a single RCA cable is all you need from the receiver (subwoofer PRE out): Ignore the other options for input for the sub, those are for if you don't have sub pre out.  This also allows you to control the sub from the receiver.  These will work fine too: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021814

other thoughts (just my opinions):

  • Sub placement effects sound quality (in terms of how your like it to sound in the areas you generally listen).  I prefer having it in the room corner.  Martin Logan has a nice video showing subwoofer placement.. if I can find it.  In any case.. getting extra length for the cable can save you some trouble in the future if you want to place it in a different part of the room.
  • not too agreeable with speaker system, especially anything under 4" domes.  But that's just my opinion.  For the price, a couple of floor standing Polks will be MUCH MUCH better.
  • Center speaker is very important for movies (and music)... otherwise voice comes out all "boxy" and unnatural.
  • banana plugs for the receiver end (it just looks so much neater lol):  http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040115

*If you go with a sub run the speakers to the sub and then the sub to the subwoofer pre-out on the Denon AVR-E200.

That sub kicks butt for the price.  It's next to my pillow.. helps me sleep at night.  Installation is one or the other, not both.

yep.
