970 or 980?

Butter

I currently  have a i7 4790k with a gtx 960 and want to upgrade my gpu but don't know if i should go with the gtx 970 or 980. The 980 is obviously better but is it worth the extra $200.

Stick with the 960 and wait a few months, if you cant contain yourself and absolutely have to get a new card go the 980ti :)

Why are you upgrading from a 960? I don't think you should upgrade from that just yet, wait for the new gpus to comeout and get those unless you're planning to game at 1440p or something

This is is probably old and has changed since, but I'm trying to show you that the price to performance of the 980Ti isn't much better than the 980.

GTX 980 Windforce 3x OC Edition-

Futuremark Score: 17920

Price: $479 (Newegg US)

Performance/Price = 17920/479 = 37.41

GTX 980Ti Windforce 3x OC Edition-

Futuremark Score: 24190

Price: $629 (Newegg US)

Performance/Price = 24190/629 = 38.45

38.45/37.41 x 100 = 102.8%

My point being, the 980 doesn't have bad price to performance (Compared to the 980Ti). You will hear people say, "Get the 980Ti, it's much better for price to performance" and in reality it is, but only by 2.8%. If you can only afford or do not want to shell out the extra cash for the Ti, the 980 isn't a bad buy (comparatively )

I think the point is that its just a bad time to be buying a new GPU, doesn't really matter what the price to performance ratio is currently because whatever cards AMD+Nvidia release in the coming months are going to smash them anyway. Just having money burning a hole in your pocket isn't a good enough reason to buy right now, have a little patience :)

GTX 970 or GTX 980 Ti, the GTX 980 isn't relevant anymore since the GTX 980 Ti release(unless you find a good deal).

I'd have to agree with 980 Ti in this case. You already have a current gen card, don't buy another current gen card unless you're doing a major increase in both peformance and VRAM, which would be the 980 Ti. Otherwise, wait out for the "1070" or something to that effect which will likely be similar performance to the 980 (I'm guessing somewhere between the 980 and the 980 Ti) but for less money.

wait till next gen cards launch...it supposed to happen end of may for nvidia and the specs we've seen so far tend to show that pascal will be a vast improvement over current cards...it's likely that the geforce X70 will be as fast as a 980ti...so yeah, just wait.
