Is getting a overclockable cpu really all that much worth it?

I mean say you get the i5-6500 and dont get a i5-6600K

All your getting with the 6600K is that you can overclock and raise a simple clock speed.I was thinking of getting a i5 not just for gaming but for everything do you really need a overclockable cpu?

Besides gaming with a core i5, if you want to do something like video editing most people prefer a core i7. If you plan on editing with an i5, since it doesn't have hyper threading (great for video editing) like the i7 does, the i5 will need as much help as it needs, so the 6600k might be a great option. If you just plan on gaming, the 6600k will still provide the extra performance when overclocked if you have a proper cooling solution. If you have the budget, I suggest you go with the 6600k.

i-6500 vs 6600k: 6600K is never worth it if a 6500 will suffice too, because you need a bigger cpu cooler, better memory, bigger psu, better case and a higher quality mobo with alot of real phases. It is not only the cpu, it affects your whole rig, it is much more expensive.

I'd never buy a non-overclockable cpu for my own personal use. but I see a lot of stock submissions on unlocked cpus coming into the cinebench database so i feel a lot of people probably wasted money

Considering you generally have to account for a 50$+ aftermarket cooler, assuming a general H60 or something is used, yes I know hyper 212 is a decent option for low budget cooling(28$)

Compounds the cost of the Unlocked processor and cooling needed for it, not to mention new skylake K series don't even come with stock cooling I believe still?

I'd generally say error on the side of caution and get a solid processor you know you'll be happy with the stock cooler fan DB, since at least far as I'm concerned thats the main issue with say Haswell on Stock cooling just being too loud, on the 95w processors, Skylake is better from what I understand
