Skyrim Help

Go to solution Solved by Atmos,

skyrim physics are tied to fps, its capped at 60 for good reason.

Sorry, but unless you want shit to break, can't uncap it without using a mod. Not even sure if a mod exists that'll stop it from breaking either.

I've been recently getting back into Skyrim (Steam version) but have run into an issue. The game does not seem to agree with anything above 60Hz; my monitor by default is 144Hz. It's kinda annoying that I gotta drop the refresh rate every single time I launch the game just to make it playable. So my question is this:

Is there any way to play Skryim at 60Hz or more with some kind of mod or patch?

OR

Is there a way that my refresh rate will drop to 60Hz automatically when the game launches, and then revert back to 144Hz when it closes? Perhaps a third party program or simple batch file?

I searched Google but I trust this community more. And frankly, it's not that bad to switch it manually but as with most people, I'd like something to make it a bit easier. Thanks for any insight.

Are you sure? I've run mine as high as 72 FPS on an overclocked monitor without issue.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

100% sure.

Check your fps with afterburner, unless you've gone in and changed the game files you cannot go above 60fps. same goes for all bethesda games on that engine. (fallout 3, 4, oblivion, skyrim, FNV)

And it was only done that way to make it easier to run on consoles.

I don't particularly feel like dumping my graphics settings for Skyrim (including DSR) to overclock my monitor and check, but Steam's in-game FPS counter had me at 72, and that was before I started modding. Does their software have a margin of error?

Yup, never said it was a good thing. When devs tie in physics to fps it's just them taking the easy route out instead of creating an actual clock. It's honestly just lazy coding.

it might have been reading your monitors refresh i dont know, instead of the fps the game was running at, because i can guarantee you the game cannot run above 60fps unless you crack open the game files and start changing stuff.

BTW, FO4 has the same issue, and probably every other game that uses the same engine.

Sounds logical. Not arguing with you at all because I'm not that familiar with the mechanics of Skyrim, just confused.

Exactly what I was experiencing. Drove me nuts. For what it's worth, once past the intro the game actually does okay except when near characters, water, trees or blades of grass

Yep, that's when the physics are coming into play. On the plus side, at least the characters speed isn't tied into the FPS (like another game, which has the FPS affecting the player but not the AI).

You know of a program, either third party or built in to Windows, that may be able to change the refresh rate automatically when the game is launched? I've been looking into Task Scheduler but not seeing anything relevant

This should help-I myself don't need it on this screen (60Hz). http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/6143/?

Although, on my old 85Hz 1024x768 monitor from 2002-2003 I didn't experience the physics glitches.

It's possible to enable "double" v-sync, which will force the game to run at half the refresh rate, thus 72 FPS for 144hz monitors, which is enough to get rid of the physics bugs.

A couple years ago, I made a utility to change more settings then the launcher lets you change, including enabling and disabling v-sync. The feature you're interested in is the "plugin tweaks", where I've made a little file enabling double v-sync through this utility.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56418/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D56418&pUp=1

What you'll want to do, is downloading the program and the "120 hertz monitor physics glitch fix tweak" file, open the utility, extract the xml file, drag&drop it into the utility and apply it.

Any adverse effects with G-Sync or anything?
