New cheap monitor?

Jay123

I'm looking to spend very little on a monitor (£130 max) I will only play games and and web browse. I want it to be 1080p, have HDMI, preferably matt black, 23 or 24", quick response time 5ms ish. It is possible to get some 23" IPS panels for £125 but since I only look head on and don't do any editing is it worth it? Should I spend the same amount on a TN 24"?

Possible TN: http://www.ebuyer.com/393201-benq-gl2450hm-24-led-lcd-hdmi-monitor-speakers-9h-l7cla-tbe

Possible IPS: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-IPS234V-PN-AEK-inch-Screen-Monitor/dp/B008F7GW2K/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3HE27JDOPUYVW&coliid=I2G3VTZX8XODIM

What specs are important in a monitor

Any input is welcomed!

A friend was looking for exactly the same thing and we ending up getting him this. It's a pretty good monitor! Good contrast ratio and everything else you would expect from the price range =]

The IPS panel you are looking at is low end (it's actually an eIPS panel). While you will get improvemet on colors it won't be huge over a TN. But you'll get to enjoy the improved sharpness and mostly noticible view angle. The Lareg view angles is what will allow you to be able to sit how you want on your desk or room, and perfectly enjoy what you see.

If you are a hard core FPS player, go with the TN, if you just FPS games for fun and not the competitive factor and/or other genre, then go with the IPS.

Resposne time is meaningless marketing number. I explain why here: http://linustechtips.com/main/forum/computer-hardware/displays/104466-does-a-1ms-monitor-really-make-a-difference?p=104576#post104576

Read in depth reviews of monitor if you want to know the real response time of the monitor, although, as these reviews takes a long time to do, and also because low end monitor will be trashed down by all it's flaws, manufacture don't send the low end models to them.

If your gonna go BenQ get a GW series, its AVMA and has a fast response times and minimal input lag.

It also has a better contrast ratio and colour reproduction than most cheap IPS and especially TN panels.

colors won't be better than IPS panel, even a cheap one. But contrast will be excellent. MVA panels really block superbly the back light. The other panel technology that blocks light just as well is PVA.. but their response time is really not good. Hence why they are only used in select, professional grade monitors, where you are going to use the monitor for critical color work exclusively on it.
