Ever since I stopped playing WoW I've struggled to find a good game to sink my time into

I like RPG games where I can level my characters/talents/skills, farm for increasingly better gear, and then be able to use that gear in solo PvP situations (ranked play would be nice). Would like for it to be a fairly recent game as well

WoW had all of the above. I never raided, mostly did arenas and rated battlegrounds. But I stopped playing because things like arena have a time commitment to them and you can't really play by yourself. Sometimes I just can't be online at a set time with my team mates to play arena matches

I went on to play Diablo3 for a while. Had the gear farm aspect for sure, but lacked any real PvP endgame where you can make use of the gear you farmed

Then I started playing MOBAs like HotS. Has the "solo pvp" aspect in the sense I can log on any time and play against people, but no sense of progression or gear grinding to improve your stats

The Division was looking SO promising until I heard about all the problems with the dark zone and the lack of any real endgame PVP in its current state. I don't want to buy the game on the hope of ubisoft fixing pvp endgame, just to never see the day arrive

I'd like to pick up a new game, so before I take the gamble with the division, what other PC RPG games are there that have these types of gameplay elements?

Rift used to have to some good pvp, but I haven't played since release.

Ive been playing the division pretty hard the last few days and whilst content is lacking you need to remember its only a week into release. I'm pretty much high end geared now just need a few items to prepare for the inc raids.

I played wow for 7 -8 years, I quit a couple times and did the same as you, trying to find a replacement, and the truth is, there isn't one, WOW is just that good (although its gone down hill massively!). Although I haven't played since first tier in WoD so well over a year now

Ill take a look at those, thanks

any thoughts on what guild wars 2 is like these days in terms of pvp?

From the last time I played GW2 the PvP was quite thriving, just a bit bland for my taste(I'm not into MMO PvP's, just isn't my thing). There's also WvW(World vs World) which is just servers fighting each other PvP style with objectives to capture.

I didn't see you mention it, but just in case Guild Wars 2 has a F2P version you could try, account restrictions here: http://help.guildwars2.com/entries/95982157?_ga=1.240955781.78332403.1436571105

F2P is mostly chat and mail restrictions so gold farmers/sellers can't use free accounts easily. You should be able to create a character and immediately join PvP if I remember correctly, don't have to worry about PvE levels since everyone scales to level 80 in PvP. You're restricted from playing WvW until level 60, because it helps deter spying/gold farmers and also I believe your PvE rank actually is used there(or some form of dynamic leveling).

Other than that, you can make two characters for free and level them both to 80, grind for gear in dungeons/PvE and do end game stuff all without spending a dime. You pretty much get the base game for free with just a few restrictions. If you enjoy the game then all you have to do is buy Heart of Thorns(can't buy the core game anymore) and it'll upgrade your account automatically(or you input a code if you buy it physically) or just keep playing as a F2P member, doesn't really hurt you in the slightest. I'm waiting for a sale later on since my guildies and I moved on from the game to play other MMO's.

If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to answer them the best I can, also the Guild Wars 2 wiki is really good, here's the PvP page if you're interested: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Player_versus_Player
