Ok, so I'm looking to upgrade the pc I built recently and I know the things I want, but I don't know the order I want to buy them in. I'm looking to get 8 more gigs of ram, (I currently only have 8 gigs) I'm looking to buy the corsair k70 cherrymx red, (which is an upgrade from my old garbage membrane keyboard) I'm looking to buy a 500gb ssd to replace my hard drive as the boot drive, and last but not least, I have a gigabyte r9 290 windforce graphics card, and my motherboard can support dual gpu so I thought another r9 290 down the line will be pretty good. What do you guys think the order of purchase should be for these items?

I would get more ram first - then SSD - (keyboard - extra GPU) last two are kind of preference, if you think you need more horsepower for gaming, gpu first,

ssd ram gpu imo

ssd will make the biggest difference

Personally i gobble up ram and so does chrome so often i am around 8gb usage and with games running around 13gb depending on the game

The 290 is a solid card and shouldn't need upgrading before the other 2.

The keyboard is up to you, peripherals are very personal so it depends on how much you hate your current keyboard.

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ stock for now --- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb --- MOBO: Asus Maximus VII Formula --- GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 980ti --- PSU: Corsair AX860i  ---  Storage: Samsung 850 250gb(OS), 3x Western Digital Blue 3tb (one for game and programs, two for media), 3tb WD Green(somewhat backup) and a Crucial M550 120gb SSD (caching games and programs drive)  --- Case: Fractal Define R5 --- Cooler: Corsair H100i with Noctua 2000rpm, Industrial Fans --- OS: Windows 10 --- Monitor: Asus PB298q + AOC l2260SWD --- Mouse: Logitech G502 Spectrum --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Red) Red LED's --- Audio: Audio Engine A2's (yes the originals), Sennheiser HD 58x Jubilee Audio-Technica ATH-AD900x, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, Ant Lion Mod Mic V4 --- Laptop: Dell XPS 9750

I'd get the keyboard first. It'll make your computer seem much nicer without modifying it.

Ram/SSD/GPU can really go in any order Unless you're already maxing out your ram or something)

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

So here's another question, I play quite a lot of Fallout 4, and I usually get around 40-60 fps. How much do you guys think that extra 8gb of ram will help that frame rate?

Sorry didnt see it said speed... derp...

SSD -> gpu -> keyboard -> RAM

SSD makes the most difference

GPU makes a lot of difference but cost way more than the ssd so its 2nd

keyboard for satisfaction while gaming

ram is last because frankly, you dont really need more than 8gb for gaming for now

SSD will be an immediate and very noticeable upgrade. I was shocked when I tossed an SSD into my laptop. I would never go back to a regular had drive after using one.

RAM - Yep, due for an upgrade, but you may not be fully using the 8GB you have now. I would do this after your SSD unless you are maxing out your ram and it is causing daily operation issues. (Aldo depending on price you might be able to do it at the same time as the SSD)

Keyboard - This is a personal issue. How much do you currently love/hate your existing keyboard? If your current keyboard makes you want to set it on fire...then upgrade sooner. Your keyboard and mouse are how you interact and interface with your machine on a daily basis. For some people a mechanical keyboard is nothing but an expensive luxury that isn't needed. For others, it makes a world of difference. I also noticed you mentioned MX-REDS for your desired board. Are you choosing this because it's the "gaming switch"? Have you actually ever touched a board with mechanical switches? I ask because you may find that you like browns or blues better. Again, a keyboard becomes a personal input device that you should test run before investing in. Try some different switches out to see what you like best. For me, I wanted an RGB board with a standard key layout (something corsair didn't have) and went with a Ducky shine 5 with MX-BROWN switches. They felt so much better to me than reds did.

Video Card - sure you could go dual GPU, but be aware that that there are many issues with dual GPU setups that can be difficult to work with. You may actually be better off waiting on this, seeing what the new generation of cards brings in the next few months, and then selling your card to fund part of the cost of upgrading to a new card instead of having 2 older GPUs in your machine.

So quite frankly im getting tired of the SSD makes the biggest difference - Yes for boot times / load time of the game, but as for ingame performance, it does squat. You can see marginal increases from RAM and also the utility is a lot greater for out of game scenarios. And these days, 8gb is "enough for gaming" but its similar to "i can get from point a to point b in my ford Pinto, or get there faster in my (insert random new car here), faster and using less gas"

i justified why ssd was first when i mentioned why the gpu was 2nd

maybe its just a personal thing but i hate load times,

getting more fps will be an improvement = satisfaction, im probably fine with what im having now but having more is even better

but long load times makes me frustrated while waiting, so SSD is a win in my case, you may prefer otherwise

if 8 gbs isnt enough, its time you close your chrome with 20 tabs on it, or check your computer for background softwares thats chugging up all the ram

Okay fair point, A lot of people however (especially if you have a dual/triple monitor setup) have to multitask, or need said programs/tabs open due to work/school. (yes i know if you have unfinished school work that SHOULD be done first, however we all have been through high school and that's quite frankly not how it works lol) If your rig is strictly for gaming, i suppose 8gb is fine.. But if you use it for anything else.. It's pushing the limit.

Edit** Also, i forgot to mention some games now are even listing 8gb as minimum to run the game (Star Wars Battlefront), and i'm not the person to just meet minimum specs and be cool with that.

being able to do work while gaming is a luxury, in more than one way, i suggest you do one or do none xD

besides, ive been gaming while allocating 1gb to ram cache, opening chrome with atleast 7 tabs open at a given time, and i never have a problem xD

so it just depends i guess
