I like this build but if you're getting a micro atx mobo might as well get a micro atx case and not a mid tower, that's my opinion

Look at getting the Intel Xeon E5 2670. It has 8 cores and 16 threads. It is also only about 70US on Ebay. It is the chip I use.

My Work in Progress PC http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/522048-xeon-build/ <-- That PC was built but never booted:(

My Work in Progress PC 2.0 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/540583-xeon-build-20-code-name-xenox (Hopefully this one boots.)

dont worry about the SSD there is no need for it. its going to be a budget pc that relies on the raw power of the cpu and gpu. storage may be the bottleneck but it doesnt really matter.

Its good for upgradability though(my opinion). It will look dumb but it will cost about the same.

getting an ATX mid tower i would think is the better option as its just a few bucks more and you can always reuse the case for later on

what is the difference in stock clock speed proformance between the i5 6500 and the i5 6600k. i doubt that my friend will overclock his CPU and i dont know if it is worth the extra $40 for a k cpu

The 6500 runs at 2.3 ghz and the 6600K default runs at 2.5. It wont effect you too much in gaming, but it's good to have the option. If you do get the 6500 get a H170 motherboard and stick with the stock cooler (for now) to save some money to upgrade another area of your build.

It's actually simply about price. The mATX mobo was the cheapest one I could find that suited my needs, and the mid tower case was the cheapest decent case with sufficient fans, dust filters, and cable management to my liking. Any more expensive and I would have had to drop something else to fit in sub $800.

i noticed that my client is planning on playing GTA V and also Fallout 4. ive tried fallout 4 and i know that it is VERY CPU BOUNDED. would the i5 6500 be a bottleneck in the system compared to the 6600k?

3.6 to 3.9, but the 6600k is super easy to overclock and you should easily hit 4.4+ with only changing 2 variables.

NO not even close. the 6600K would get you a few more FPS but its not worth it IMO. It depends on what you can get(how expensive the Z170 board is compared to the H170 version).

You can't overclock the i5 with that board.

As for Intel locking overclocking, that's only if you use the newest bios with the newest microcode. All you have to do to OC is find the right motherboard with the right bios. So long as you didn't flash the newest microcode, you're good, and even if you made that mistake I hear you can just flash an older bios that includes a microcode "update" before an OC bios. However, in the i5-6500 build I posted, as I said earlier OCing the i5 is not possible because the motherboard doesn't support it.

i see i know that youd have to use a z170 board to do that. but i doubt that my friend would risk overclocking the CPU so thats kind of out the window.

UPDATE: my friend is trying to negotiate with his parents to raise the budget of the PC to around $1000. i know that it is the sweet spot for price to performance.

It's not actually the sweet spot. $650 or so is the sweet spot, but $1000 will get him a machine that can run anything at max.

This would be the real "sweet spot" price to performance king build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($189.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($44.99 @ Micro Center)

Storage: A-Data Premier SP550 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($57.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($49.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 380 4GB NITRO Dual-X OC Video Card  ($174.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Core 1300 MicroATX Mini Tower Case  ($39.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($53.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $641.81
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

It won't max everything out, but it can get really close. (and yeah, I found a decent mATX case for cheap too, but shipping at NCIX makes it more expensive than the other one)

-the motherboard is expensive for no reason. Remember, motherboards do not affect performance. They just have a featureset. Any Z chipset board will do for your purposes

-going dual channel is fine since you have 4 slots, and it's a slight increase in memory bandwidth, as 2400 is like $1 more expensive, and worth it

-the EVGA G1 PSU is crap at voltage regulation. Get a G2 or GS if you want EVGA.

-that case is not worth $70. If you're spending that much, at least get the S340

-$150 for a 1080p 60hz TN panel is NOT a good deal Get 60hz IPS or 144hz TN if you're on a budget
