so I am running a lan party for a project at school.

It will be run at school where we have 200 up 200 down

what is the best way of networking it (we will likely have about 50 people)

I would also like to run a game server. what is the best way of going about that?

My rig: r7 1700 @ 3.9/1.35v, 16gb ddr4 3200, assorted rando SSDs, hx 1050, vega 64 1650/1025

Hi.

Use ethernet (for those machines that have ethernet) for that. You will probably need an ethernet switch. Talk to your school about getting one of those.

Running game servers can be difficult. I recommend using a different machine to the one you will be gaming on and use it to host the servers. Create LAN servers so others can't join, just those on the network. For the games you'll be playing, just google 'how to host a (insert game here) server'.

Good luck, I wish I could do a project like this for my school!

Power?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by 'power'.

If I am correct and please correct me if I am not, you're talking about the power for the machines.

Technically, you should evenly distribute the power but in my setup I don't. It may be worth using anywhere from 4-10 power sockets with numerous power boards. There shouldn't be a power delivery issue as with my setup, I've got 22 power sockets being powered off of 1 socket on the wall. As long as all of the power cords are firmly plugged in, you should be fine.

Seriously, you don't even need a Xeon for any of that.

Just look on eBay for an old LGA775 build with 4GB RAM and a decent hard drive. That's all you'll need.

It's not like you'll be hosting files or rendering video, so you just need something with speedy ethernet.

EDIT: You would actually be fine with something like a Core 2 Duo CPU, just something that is 'good enough' to stay on for a long time and host gaming servers.

counter strike you probably do not need to buy a server, plus setting a server for games yourself is quite time consuming

as it is a project it is something I want to do...
