I am a noob to PC hardware.

I wanted to know if I could add an egpu to my laptop using the port that is used to connect dvd drive.

no, sata is not pcie

the difference in transfer speed between these two connectors is like the difference between the market share of amd and nvidia, not to scale

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

No dice. That's a sata port , a mini-sata port or some proprietary connector with sata data transfer. It cannot be used to connect a GPU or any other expansion cards for that matter. You need a Thunderbolt connector for eGPU.

There are external GPUs with USB connection. Those are very poor in performance You can add a display with one and scrape by doing non-3D stuff with it but they're nowhere near powerful enough to game on.

If you are yet to get a Laptop and use an eGPU on it, get a laptop with a external PCI slot or a (more commonly) a thunderbolt port. Only these will help you get a better gaming performance .

USB does help but on all honesty is not at all recommended, as the price you would spend in the GPU is not worth it for the minimum performance gain.

Another way is to rip out your Wifi card and use THAT slot for PCI connection, but you will have to definitetly get a non noob to do it for you.

Please vote for Donald Trump. I am out of sitcoms to watch.

When lyfe gives you HDDs, make SSDs
