I'm not too proud to admit that I have absolutely no idea how to setup an optimal RAID with backup. I currently have 5 4TB WD Red drives, and this is the only thing keeping me from powering up my machine. I have had a lot of trouble finding out the best way to set up a RAID. I want the most possible storage, but I don't know what the best way to do it. I would like to RAID 0 as many of them as possible, but still be able to use one (if possible) as a backup. Will 16 TB total of RAID 0 be safe if I only have one 4TB drive, or should I get a bigger HDD for my backup drive?

I suggest RAID 5

You lose one drive for redundancy, but it's the best option IMO

I also recommend RAID 5. its supported on most mobos and offers faster speeds like RAID 0, with 1 drive ofr redundency.

Which is another problem for me because I have a balls-to-the-wall build with 4 GTX 980's, so I don't have the PCIE slot for a RAID controller. Does RAID 5 need a raid controller?

What is the mobo in this build? Depending on the mobo, you may already have RAID 5 configurable with the mobo.

The motherboard is an ASUS ROG Maximus V Rampage

Look in the manual and find out which SATA ports are on the RAID controller. Plug drives into those ports. Change the mode in the BIOS to RAID. On boot, you should see the option to configure the RAID.
