Hey,

I want to build a video editing workstation and I came across some other people using these for their editing work.

I was wondering what the exact use is for these cards. Are they acceleration cards or are they just to use multiple monitors?

Please don't tell me to wait for AMDs 9000 series >:( haha

Thank youuu!

Does anyone even use PCIe SSDs?

O.o it should be Quadro vs FirePro shouldn't it?

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

I guess? I don't know super much about this stuff TBH. I've used multiple workstations that were packed with different things, but now that I'm starting to do free lance work I have no idea what to expect.

A lot of video effects can be rendered real time using moderately powerful video cards and can also be rendered faster via OpenCL or CUDA accelerated rendering, generally you should check which performs best on the Programs you will be using, generally CUDA performs better on Sony Vegas and OpenCL performs better in Adobe Programs as of CS6.

Thanks, I'll be sure to read up on it before deciding what to go for.

No, low end cards with high RAM is for "work" computers that run multiple monitors. Workstation grade cards are designed for raw mathematical computational power, not graphical. The drivers that come with them also make them superior as a workstation card, the price of that is included. Certain functions in some programs require said drivers.

Thanks for your reply! I'll try to learn a little more before spending a whole lot of money on stuff I might not need.

K4000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133485 or W7000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195118 would be what to look at if your wanting a mid-level professional card.

My budget for just the graphics card would be around 800EUR (a little over a 1000USD). So should I just go for a Quadro within my budget for a 1080 and 2.5K+ workflow?

They're also less likely to make miscalculations.

Don't allocate separate fund for each part. You easily end up with a bad value that way. Plan your build as a whole.

Again, it depends on what programs you use and what you're doing.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

Isn't a Quadro overkill for a video editing station? They are designed for 3D work environments.

Well I did abit of a research, because I was sceptical mainly about the after effects 3D "engine" and rendering and some other video editing softwares with some 3D extent, and 95% of them use the CPU and not the GPU as a primary rendering unit, they use the GPU more for preview while you work, really the Quadro or a FirePro are to much for what you will be using them, not just for their price but for what they were made to do.
