So in the past few months my storage needs have rapidly grown and so I needed some sort of way of adding more storage and adding multiple spinning drives to my Small Corsair 250D was just not an option so I created a home server!

Specs

  • Corsair 350D case (upgrading to NZXT Source 210 / Rackmount Case)
  • Asus P8H61M Motherboard
  • Intel Core i3-2100 w/ Stock Cooler
  • 4GB's of Generic DDR3
  • 3x 1TB Western Digital HDD (Mass Storage)
  • 1x 240GB Western Digital HDD (OS)
  • EVGA 600B 600W PSU

Here are some photos! Also I put this in my closet so I don't have to hear the fans and drives spinning.

The server itself

The software

So like I said I'm going to be upgrading this a little bit going into the future. The upgrades include a new case with more storage space, as well as more RAM. Right now I'm pretty set on the NZXT Source 210 as it has 8x 3.5" drive bays + 3x 5.25" drives bays where I can put either hot swap bays / or a optical drive. I'll probably end up going with 2x hotswap and a optical drive. I'm also gonna get a SSD (probably 32GB) to install the SSD onto for faster operating. Once the RAM is upgraded I'll also end up using this for a dedicated MC server as well as a dedicated Halo: Online Server.

Any questions / comments?

Good work man, do you plan on integrating some sort of VPN link so you access storage remotely?

Already using a VPN to connect to it :D

Honestly I didn't go with Linux for a few reasons

  1. I don't use Linux much and so setting it up would be a bit tricky for me
  2. I'm not a big fan of Linux in general, too much extra typing for simple shit
  3. I'm very familiar with Windows / Windows Server so this setup was cake

Nice build. I'm planning on running a folding PC 24/7 and a storage farming server 24/7 in my college dorm room starting this fall. Should be interesting. Hopefully nothing in the rules are against that.

Nice! If they don't know and you don't get charged electricity do it for sure! When I go off to college next year I'll put a lower power server with higher density storage into a small case and then that'll be my storage server. I'll keep it in my closet or under my bed while I'm there.

Pretty much my idea. I'm going to have the two PC's shoved in a corner somewhere. DriveShare and Folding. Should be fun....

It's pretty easy :)

Can you elaborate on what you have going on in the software side of things? I see you have Server 2012 installed so there are multiple ways of creating a storage server, did you create a storage space or go another route?

For tonight I just created shares and then mounted then as a network drive however when I have more time tomorrow afternoon I'll be creating virtual drives.
