I am wondering if I could afford a UPS that would give my desktop computer, monitor, and router a five minute or so period to safely shut down and prevent "brownouts" which can last as little as a few seconds from destroying data. I am going to be running a 500w gold PSU for my computer, and an Asus MG279Q 27'' monitor. What kind of voltage/rating do I need to support this kind of a setup?

Getting a quality power supply is just as important as a UPS if you have really critical data you can't risk losing. What PSU are you planning to buy, and what important data do you need protected? Do you do highly professional work and run a server, for instance? If you're just someone like a gamer, I don't recommend a UPS, as I find it unnecessary. If you really have need for protecting data, you're going to want to run a RAID configuration with some industrial-grade hard drives and store multiple backups on external media frequently.

Silverstone SFX-L 500w gold for a mini ITX build, its a decent psu. The data is not actualy very important, its mostly the disconnects themselves are very costly. A couple of minutes offline might cost as much as a PSU in an inconvenient time.

It depends more so on what components your running than just the PSU wattage to get an accurate measure of what your needs are. But something from APC based around a max load of 500W something like this would be a good option: http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Power-Saving-Back-UPS-Pro-1000/P-BR1000G
