5820K for rendering?

Its kind of a simple question that would be obvious to me if not for the fact that it's a 32 bit rendering engine.... AKA Source.

 

My question is would the extra 2 cores/4 threads be worth it for rendering maps? Renders can take up to a week for me even on my Xeon which has 8 threads... Would I see a signifigent time save?

I would choose the mouse because I've been using an old Logitech one from like 2004 or so. lol Not my first choice but the only one I had readily available at the time.

Yes threads are very helpful for rendering. Look at an i5-4690k vs i7-4790k: equal for gaming but for rendering and video editing i7 is way ahead of i5. The extra threads are worth it.

Definitely go for the 4790k so you can get 8 threads with hyperthreading

yeah but what gen is it?! and what clockspeed does it run at?

if you take this 12 threads haswell-E i7-5820K chip and overclock to 4ghz+ it should be pretty darn fast...

it's in is signature...i missed it as well..he as the E3-1241 V3...so the haswell-E i7-5820K would be roughly 50% faster it having 50% more threads/cores :)

but the i7-5820K you can overclock it and get even more...so probably shorter rendering times by around 60 to 75% is achievable versus current xeon he has.

I should add that I was going to upgrade my cpu and motherboard anyway... I was going to get an 4790K, but if the extra 4 threads is worth it, I'll spent the extra 100ish dollars for new memory and better CPU

yeah but OP is RENDERING MAPS in the Source engine...not playing team fortress 2?! and also...Fallout 4 is source engine and it's greatly multi-threaded.

If you could provide me with a sample file for rendering and a link to whatever program you're using I'd be happy to run a test render and report the time. Could adjust -25% for the lower core/thread count, or just disable 2 of my cores, depending on program scaling (I doubt it's true 1:1).

Fallout 4 isn't on the Source engine.

Fallout 4's on whatever engine Bethesda used for Fallout 3/New Vegas, except optimized "better".

What CPU do you have? And it might take a while if you do. I'm just using the default hammer setup. vvis.exe takes the longest. It was over 100 hours last time I rendered my map.

Actually Valve says it can use up to 6 but after that the result see no increase even if you can use 12... (paste "-threads 12" into launch options!)
