Poking LCD Screens

While reading the expereinces with non-techies thread, they were talking aboit jabbing LCDs, and it jusy occured to me.

 

I haven't a single fucking clue why the colors go all screwey in that spot when you poke it.

 

What is that? What's happening right there. I must know.

I believe it's because an LCD screen is just array of Red, Green, and Blue LED's and when you push on it you're distorting the field that they're lighting up / interrupting the signal. Then again- I"m probably incredibly incorrect.

Not too far off though, its as you say, when you poke it, you move the liquid around, and change the angle at which the light exits the panel, distorting the image and even breaking up the light into the different colors. Its the same thing as that that happens when you shine a light though a prism and rotate the prism.

As I recall, you're displacing the liquid (you know, because Liquid Crystal Display), and that makes it get all screwy. Not sure if it's the same thing for monitors, but I know it's like that on stuff like a TI-84, GameBoy, etc.

And reason why LCDs which have had one punch too much are basicly dead. Top most layer of protection is curved too much in so crystals won't be able to recover back to normal orientation.
