Mac Book Pro HDD error!! What to do?

Mouse-Potato
Go to solution Solved by Tieox,

My girlfriend has a 2012 Macbook Pro C2D, last year it begun to have HD issues, I forget the details but in the end the drive was fine, it turned out to be the ribbon from the drive to the logic board.  Basically it's at a bad angle, and over time wears.

It cost me £100 to have fixed including some other service work.

I'm posting for a friend who is having some trouble with her Mac Pro.

It's giving her a message that the HDD can't be repaired and that she has to backup all data, reformat and restore all backed-up files.

Apparently the HDD has been tested, diagnostics run.

I am not very familiar with Mac's and OSX and all that jazz. Maybe one of you guys could help us out!

Has this ever happened to any of you? is this common?

Back up her files, create install media and reinstall the OS.

I suggest taking it to best buy or an apple certified store to have them look at it at least. But if reinstalling the OS doesn't work, you'll probably have to get the HDD replaced.

Even though the disk utility said that there were zero errors you mean to say that there might very well be a problem with the drive?

Possibly, reinstalling the OS should fix the issues if it's software issue.

I know nothing about macs, and I have never used one though.

ofcourse there could be, it's like you can have a cable which is exposed to the weather but it's working for now. however it wont work forever and when it rains it will just fuck up.

When disk utility finds an error it can't fix, it just means the error is in the OS system files, and disk utility isn't powerful enough to fix it. This means you need to do a complete erase and install instead of just a reinstall. No big deal though.  Could be something as simple as a bad update.

The fact that the computer still boots into the OS is best case scenario. Because you have a chance to back up her home folder. Either using time machine if possible or drag and drop /Users/*

Then you go into recovery (image 2) use disk utility to erase the partition then download/install fresh copy of OSX and bobs your uncle.

I mentioned this to my friend but another friend of hers that is familiar with Mac's assured me that the Mac OS architecture isn't like that of Windows for example so a bad kernel wouldn't affect the HDD... I guess I was right?

Thanks for the heads up
