I just recently got a Dell Optilex 7040 SSF for work.( I am a graphic designer) and I am my r5 340x that came with it is crashing weekly so I am looking to upgrade. I have tried the Gigabyte 750ti low profile and the cooler is too larger. I have an MSI single slot one but I fear the cooler is still too large since the fans face downward so the PSU is in the way. The 340X only has 2gb ddr3 and runs at pcie 2.0 8X so anything above that would be nice.

I'm using one of these in my HTPC. It has 1GB GDDR5 memory which is mush faster than DDR3 and actually helps performance on these low-end cards by quite a bit. It's a pretty decent GPU as far as low-end GPUs go. Should suit your needs well enough and should fit in your SFF Optiplex just fine. ;)

I have the small form factor so the second one from the right next to the full tower. I have spent 122 on the 750 so keeping it there will be fine. And does 1gb ddr5 outweigh 2gb ddr3? I replies to this to get more traffic for a solution. I cannot find a single slot card with 2gb ddr5. Is there a possibility one will come out in the next 6 months?

Yes, 1GB GDDR5 will out perform 2GB DDR3 at this performance level. The GPU isn't really fast enough to need more than 1GB Vram anyways.

I have a GTX 460 with 1GB GDDR5 in one of my other PCs. It performs quite well and is a lot faster than a GT730. ;)

Thanks, I would love to get a 460 but because work is paying for it the more legitimate way to purchase it the better :P. If this 750ti doesn't fit I'll probably try and RMA my r5 340x or buy a 730 off of Amazon.

So I got the 750ti to fit. But i had to remove the fan & plastic. Plus it is too long to fit in my case so my case is open. Will there be issues with heat? There isnt much space between it and the power supply.

Without the fans on a 750Ti, I think you *might* run into temperature issues. It will be fine to run under light loads, so I would suggest you open up MSI afterburner and watch your GPU temps to monitor. If everything looks, good, then try loading it up and be prepared to stop the test if temps get too high to quick (I doubt it). I imagine airflow is not too great in that case as well. So it could be a problem. Again, you just have to test it to find out.

Just looked at some pictures of that particular 750ti. Has a pretty small fan to begin with, so you might just be ok running it passively.

I'd hate to run it with the case open but I don't see any other way. Alternativley the AMD r7 350x is supported on my computer through Dell and has 4gb DDR3. I am going to be using it for large format graphic design and maybe WoW in the background. Would I be better off with more RAM or DDR5?

IMO, you'd be better off with 2GB GDDR5 vs 4GB DDR3. GDDR5 is much faster and I can't see a weak GPU like a 340x ever being able to use much more than 1GB. I'm not familiar with what kinds of loads or resources are required with graphical design - can it use high amounts of Vram at times? Perhaps it would be beneficial to watch your Vram usage while working - that will give you a better idea of what your typical workload actually uses and needs.

Here is a photo. I am waiting for WoW to finish to see what the temp under load is. It looks like as I am just surfing the web it is at 54C for temp which I have never looked at GPU temps so I dont know if thats bad or good. As you can see my dilema is that the pcie slot is on the bottom not the top :/

Edit: After playing for 5min temps climbed up into the 90s.

So I am able to put it in the slot above which is a 4x slot. Any drawbacks for a graphic designer vs using only an 8x card?

Is that top slot a PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 x4 slot? Not sure if the card will even work in one of those slots TBH.

Yeah.... You'll definitely need to have that fan running on it then. ;)

I see you still have the full height bracket on the card. Usually these half-height cards come with a half-height bracket you can swap out. Did this one not come with one?

No it came with one. Just didn't want to fuss with it if it didnt work.

On dell's website it just says  1 half height PCIe x4. Is there a way I can check if it's 2.0 or 3.0? It runs but MSI afterburner doesnt recognize it.

Pretty sure it's a 2.0 x4 slot. If it works and doesn't seem to reduce performance, then that may be your ticket. ;)

Haha yea but it just seems so janky. My office paid for it so I just don't want to be telling them in a month I need another new one :P I restarted afterburner was am getting a high of 60 degrees. Will getting the gt 730 with 2gb DDR5 reduce my performance a lot? I guess I won't be playing WoW on it but I'm just using it to benchmark right now.

The GT 730 is significantly slower than the 750Ti, so I would say yes. It may not make much difference in terms of the work you do on this machine but it will reduce gaming performance by quite a lot.

The GT 730 is significantly slower than the 750Ti, so I would say yes. It may not make much difference in terms of the work you do on this machine but it will reduce gaming performance by quite a lot.

K. So in your honest opinion. 750ti on a x4 slot, or gt 730 on a x16 slot?

IMHO, you will get more performance out of a 750ti on a x4 slot than a 730 on a x16 slot. ;)

Just curious; what CPU and how much system ram is in this thing?

I have a core i5 6500 and 16gb DDR4 RAM

Ok, yeah, no bottleneck there. ;) Only in extreme gaming situations will the x4 slot restrict the 750ti, but in most scenarios, it'll be fine and still better than you'd ever get from from 730 on a x16 slot.

Thank you so much. I might play wow occasionally but I should really only use this pc for work :P

I also have a month to return it from Amazon so that's a nice long period.
