building a new PC & looking for a GPU to stay somewhat relevant in gaming.. (mostly PS3/4 gamer here..). but I am in need of a GPU that will help the load on the CPU for either graphical editing (high res Photos, and some Video editing)

so far I am getting the below:

5820 6 core i7

x99 board (unsure which one at this point still sifting reviews..)

16gb ddr4 2400 2x 8gb sticks (upgradeable to 32GB should I need it)

looking for something to enhance the CPU capabilities, and a possible SLI in the future.

I've been looking at the GTX 970 for the price point, but after hearing about the 3.5 GB cotroversey, I'm leaning towards just upping the bank a little and going with a GTX 980/Ti... but there are SOOO many choices, and certain versions get updated drivers while others dont, some support certain features.. others dont.. I have'nt counted AMD out, but they tend to suck up the juice. looking for a good balance.

looking to drive my old DELL 22" E228WFPc supporting:1680 x 1050 - 65.0 kHz Horizontal, 60.0 Hz Vertical, 146.25 MHz

not the greatest monitor, but will serve me until I replace with a decent Dual/Tri monitor setup when funds are available.

the heat/power usage I'd like to keep down when in idle, so a card that has a sleep mode would be awesome.
