It's just normal laptop memory, it's not fabbed by apple, it's not packaged by apple, apple has nothing to do with the RAM that they use, the RAM they use is either Samsung or Hynix. It'll work fine in anything that uses SODIMM memory of that type.

When replacing the ram in a old macbook pro, is there any reason why i should have to buy the "mac memory" over just normal laptop memory?

Crucial makes all of apple's RAM. So if you buy from them you're good to go. Just make sure its the same speed and type as yours. (Click the apple > about this mac > Overview )

You can buy from other companies, but I've seen certain brands get the computer bricked... Not sure how or why. though.

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

Macs are finicky about clock speed. They usually only accept the higher clocked RAM. For instance, the PowerMac G5s from 2003 only accept DDR 400 instead of 333.

Comment like these are just not wanted, the whole Mac vs PC thing is dated and boring, when it comes to laptops Apple have a very nice design, and if you actually look at the price of laptops these days they are not really that expencive and to compare a £300 laptop from PCworld is just stupid.
