I've completed the main story and can't seem to get back in game?

What have I done wrong?, there is still a lot left to do on it and I'm a little pissed at the prospect of restarting it.

Did you remember to activate the Broken Steel ESP file from the launcher? The main story line ends the game unless the Broken Steel DLC is active

Best game in the world, ive never had this problem, last time I completed it I think it said something that told me I could continue and just threw me back into the base I was in when it ends.

How do I check if Broken Steel is enabled?

You go into the launcher

And click on the "DATA FILES" tab. In here the should be some .esp or .esm files that needs to be activated in order to activate the DLC

I've just ticked it, is it too late.

Will I have to start again because thinking about it, it wouldn't bother me but I have like 22,000 caps and masses of weapons and ammo at Megaton

You should be fine loading up your last save game. You will get a number of prompts that will tell you that the DLC(s) have been activated and that your level cap has been raised.

If you play Fallout games and you're smart you have various copies of saves and a few saves before you did something because the saves corrupt quite easily and there are some game breaking bugs. And Fallout new vegas saves automatically before the final mission so this won't happen. I'm not sure about 3 though

Hmm, then I don't know if it's too late. The only way of finding out is ending the game again and see of you can continue.

I do, I constantly F5 (well not constantly) but like a prick I didn't realise the mission I was doing was the end otherwise I wouldn't have F5'ed near Project Purity.

I would have avoided it at all costs

Yeah it's good to quicksave(not a feature on the consoles lol)But you don't have any other close by saves?

Press the key next to 1, tilde I believe and write player.additem "ID" "number of items", remove quotes check the IDs in the fallout 3 wiki. Also make sure the prefixes corresponding to the dlcs are right(the wiki helps with that)

player.additem 0100c07c 1. This should give you a shocksword, an item from operation anchorage. If you get this item you should have the DLCs

I've done that, nothing popped up.

That would indicate that you do not have the DLC, try this just to be sure: player.additem 0200c07c 1 - But if you have checked the data files, the DLC should activate and you should get new quest I believe. Starting a new save is a way to check if the dlcs are installed for sure. But you seriously don't have any save games before the purifier quest?

It's been about a year+ since I played it, I always thought you could just continue, infact I'm pretty certain I did, remember getting the alien blaster etc.

Can you not just reload to a save just before the last quest? finish up what you wanna do then end it?

Edit: @FireFox, my last playthrough would have been GOTY and just googled it, yeah the original doesn't spit you back out.

You could try reloading your last save with the DLC enabled then complete the story and see if that makes a difference.
