I am planning on buying a new laptop for under $500 but I can't find a perfect one. I'm planning on using it for gaming and for work. I have been looking at chrome books too. Which laptop should I get, or is chromebook ok for gaming?

Try getting a used Ideapad Y510/Y410 or even a Y40/50 if you're lucky. If you want or need a new system look into Dell Inspiron notebooks, which may be just slightly out of your budget.

A ChromeBook wont be good for gaming.

No Chromebooks for gaming. I'd look for used systems at your price point.

If you're willing to go to a lower-end manufacturer like Acer, there are some A10, i3 and i5 systems out there, although they're U and Y SKUs. Some of them that touch the $500 mark have 6-8GB of RAM, which would help, but there still aren't any real gaming-optimized laptops in the bunch. I know plenty here (and beyond) eschew Acer, but I picked up a Switch 11 with an i5-4202Y in it shortly before Christmas for $450. It doesn't run rings around the rest of the world, but I've had no issues with build quality or software problems pop up with everyday use as my primary business laptop. Just something to consider--you're not going to find an ASUS or Alienware gaming laptop brand new at $500.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Gaming laptop under $500 there are some laptops like acer with A10 APU or others that has a dedicated amd Chips under the amd apu side and same apu a10 for the Lenovo Z50

for intel there are some like i3-i5 ulv sku's like the Toshiba Satellite C55

there are some laptops you can find from stores to websites only that some are way under you budget

but for discrete graphics for gaming I recommend looking a second hand laptops :)
