Hello there everyone I have been wondering if it is a good idea to buy a second hand CPU.

How long is the average life span of a CPU?

I also want to over clock it.

The CPU I wana get is a i5 2500k wich fits my LGA 1155 socket.

Also if there is something better for a similar price that fits please tell me.

CPUs basically last forever (long past their use period) if they're treated properly. If you're buying it with paypal, then I'd feel pretty comfortable since you can validate it and if it doesn't work then just contact paypal and send the item back.

I'm going to be buying face to face as the Post Office in South Africa gets like 1% of packages through and I will also be paying in cash.

How much could I expect to pay for one?

I don't know what South African prices are like, so I can't really say.

I personally wouldn't buy a CPU unless I was able to validate it thoroughly (think running Prime95/Aida64 for an extended period of time -- a few hours at least).

I wouldn't do Prime95. Its a CPU killer now

European prices are around 100 to 130€, I guess you can just convert this one-to-one.

If you have the CPU don't forget to actually check the name of the CPU in CPU-Z or any other tool. Guys how delid CPUs are still around and could try to sell you a way cheaper CPU with another cap on it.

Well cpus are extremely resilient.  Just make sure it wasn't fed insane amounts of voltage.  The most fragile part of one is the resistors on the back,  so that gives you an idea how durable they are.

As long as the voltage isn't set to auto (which it shouldn't be), then there's no problem with P95.

I've had a 2nd hand i7 2600 for over 3 years now and I've honestly had no problems whatsoever and It doesn't look like it will have problems anytime soon either
