Optical drive or not?

Go to solution Solved by You_are_a_cunt,

If you really want one, just get an external drive that you'll use when you need it and store it somewhere the rest of the time.

Drivers you'll find on manufacturer websites easily

Hey guys!

I have decided to build myself a PC for the first time, but I wonder if I should buys a optical drive? DVD and so on, is it worth it? And when al my parts arrive do I need to install the drivers that come from the CD or can I just download them later?

I only have one because I like to watch Blu-rays on my PC. Other than that unless you're installing games or programs from disc I would just go with a external as revsilverspine said.

I always recommend an optical drive but part of that has to do with the fact that I only have a 4mb/s connection.

As @revsilverspine said, you can always go the external drive route. However it's generally more expensive than internal optical drives.

It's a good investment, especially if you're on a metered connection. But since you're in Sweden I'd say an internal one isn't necessary because AFAIK you guys have pretty good ISPs or internet plans

Since my laptop can't run modern games too well I use a PS4

Ok thank you for the advices guys, right now the optical drive isn't in my budget but later on maybe, and yes our internet is very good in sweden. Im running on a fiber 100/10 connection and it's great. But it's not the biggest connection (national standards are like 25/12 here :))

I have 100 mb download and 10 mb upload for 300 kr a month, which is about 35 US dollars. Scandinavia is awesome! And I have the ability to go 1000 mb download 250 mb upload for about 100 dollars a month

I personally don't use an optical drive, but I want to have it so that I don't look dumb with all those old games on CDs and DVDs but without a way to use them. Besides, a decent enough DVD drive is maybe 20$
