Turntable under $1500?

This isn't for me, I'm looking into this for my Father. He wants a new turn table to play his vinyl on, he's one of those old guys who still have all their vinyl from the 70's haha. He has recently purchased a receiver, I'm pretty sure a Marantz PM8004. He wants the table and everything  to cost around $1500, I was looking at the Technics SL-1210MK5, I read some things on Head-fi and people said it was great for the money and built really well. I don't know much about turntables though so I'm looking for a second opinion. Of course he will need a cartridge and stylus aswell, So what would be the best bet for under $1500?

I would go to second hand shops and thrift shops.  You can sometimes find really good old gear that only requires a new stylus.

That's what I was told, someone on head-fi said that With a $1500 budget if you bought used you would be able to get double of what you could if you bought new.

If you are really lucky you could buy ten times as much gear,  to be honest I haven't looked at new turntables in  long time because I am happy with the two I have, however I would be surprised if you could get something at $1500 new that would be noticably better than $500 new.

Of course, this implies that you have good second hand shops around.

This is true.

This is true.

A lot of DJ's are dumping their Technics SL-1210's I guess. I'm seeing pairs on ebay for around $1200. They were about $1200 new a piece. I read some where that DJ's are starting to spin CD's for some reason? Not to sure why or how true this is but yea.. :)

It's true, there is a big market for cd dj scratch decks and mixers.  It's just the evolution of music I'm afraid (no ever said evolution meant things get better  ) People are now even starting to mix with mp3 and other file formats.  It may also be a size/weight thing if you play live.

The synagogue I work at has a lot of various parties, and just about every DJ who's showed up uses some kind of playlist off a computer. The worst part, imo, is they never hit shuffle.

I could definitely that understand from a convenience and portability stand point. I never liked DJing as it is, but scratching CD's just seems strange... Oh well I'm not into that stuff anyways :)

I know exactly what you mean.  I like my good old fashion rock n roll, the simpler the better. drums guitar and a bass... maybe a second guitar.

Haha, I could picture that. "Are you guys ready to listen to to the same artist for 2 hours?, cause I sure am" Maybe since the prices keep dropping I should pick myself up an inexpensive turntable later on down the road. I have some vintage vinyl I've collected over the years that I pretty much use for decoration like Eric Clapton, Hendrix, some first print Beatles like Abbey Road, it sure would be nice to actually listen to it haha :)

For sure, I have a special place in my heart for folk music as well especially Jim Croce. I've been listening to him since I was about 7 years old, my dad gave me his greatest hits CD one day and I loved it. Also you can never forget good old Bob Dylan

No one will ever forget Bob dylan, it sounds like a tone deaf goat taught him to sing  :P :P

Seriously I was just introduced to the local folk music club a couple days ago and I had good time playing with them. They do a lot of the older welsh, irish and english folk tunes.

No hating on Dylan man :) Yea I love Irish folk music, it's just a lot of fun to listen to and all around good enjoyable music :)

I'm glad my Dad turned me on to good music as a child, when I was young and first started playing guitar I was hooked on Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, and Zeppelin

I've recently been listening to Balmorhea a lot, they're a acoustic post-rock band, it is so relaxing to listen to.

I don't hate on dylan, he's just an easy target for a laugh. :)

I reckon Clapton, floyd and zepplin shaped most of the music we hear today.

Fair enough haha, definitely though Clapton got me into the blues, from their I went on to older stuff like Wilson Pickett, The Drifters, and of course Chuck Berry.

My music taste is so vast though it's just easier to tell you what I don't like, I appreciate music for what it is. One thing I can't stand is that whole "deathcore" scene or whatever the hell it is, a bunch of untalented morons trying to make music with Drop tuned guitars playing one string on one fret. I do listen to classic death metal like Cannibal Corpse, and Deicide.
