What types of tasks would I be better off with an i7 compared to an i5?

CorgiJam

Please be specific as possible. I'm trying to set up a build with no general budget, but I don't even know if I want to get an i7 or an i5. I won't mention exactly what I'M planning to do because I frankly don't know yet, but I would appreciate knowing where i7 processors would excel compared to their cheaper counterparts. I'd also appreciate it if anybody could give me an example of just HOW much an i7 helps compared to an i5 in specific tasks.

Video editing. Basically anything that can use more threads. If you don't know what you're doing, then we can't really help you?

Might want to figure out what you're actually going to be using the PC for and then build, rather than build and regret.

If you have no desire to overclock, why not just get a Xeon? I7 at the price of an i5. Best of both worlds.

If you think "oh, I might want to OC later" just get the Xeon. I've had 2 i7's in my last rigs, and never once did I need to OC.

Yeah, you can really help me. I don't need to be spoonfed a build, I want to know details so I can think about what I am going to do and act on it.

In any case, I can't get a Xeon because I'm not going to be buying a discrete graphics cards. Xeon processors are not manufactured with integrated graphics included.

I5 or i7 with no gpu?

Why exactly?

I'm simply just not a heavy enough gamer to want a discrete GPU until later. I might buy one if I ever decide to get more into gaming, but I find myself busy with sports/school/lighter games (like League of Legends) all the time.

Do graphics cards help with more than just gaming?

Yep! For sure they do

some xeons do have onboard graphics adapters, just not all of the XEON line is equipped.

You never really know how much difference a gpu makes untill you want to play a game and cant run it.

For example a friend of mine just built a pc with an i7 6700k and no gpu(saving for a 980)and he plays world of tanks bearly breaking 50fps on min settings.

However my gtx 960 with an i5 runs it around 80fps maxed out.

For that big of a difference i would get a gpu, even if you need to drop down to an i5 to afford one.

Even something like a 750ti can still keep up with most games fine.

Generally the difference is simply processing power. Think of it like the difference between a 250HP motor and one that is rated at 375HP. Without having a general idea of how the cpu will be used, it really isn't possible to provide more clarity. This is because computers are not used to do one thing at a time and there are many different patterns of use.

I can't seem to find one with hyperthreading and integrated graphics. That defeats the purpose of getting a Xeon in general.

EDIT: Nevermind, there's just only one v5

I don't think you can use v5 Xeon's with an LGA1151 motherboard. If you were going that route you'd have to go with LGA1150 chips. I don't think you'd see much of a difference between the two if you're considering that route.

If you're going with a locked chip, you don't actually save that much, about $20 going the Xeon route. I thought they had a cheaper integrated option. Still, $20 is $20.

If you're doing a lot of video editing, coding, etc more cores are helpful. Though I think you'd know if this was the reason you were building the PC, it's not exactly something one prepares to "possibly do" later in the future.

If you're using it for just daily tasks, you're more than fine with an i5.

There are several with integrated gpu: http://ark.intel.com/search/advanced?s=t&FamilyText=Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v5 Family&GraphicsModel=Intel® HD Graphics P530&CoreCountMin=4&CoreCountMax=4&ThreadCountMin=8&ThreadCountMax=8 But only two of those use the LGA1151 socket and they do not run on Z170 motherboards. They need a C232 or C236 motherboard.

If you want to use a Xeon, then the E3 V3 family would be easier as they run on most Z97, H97, etc. motherboards.
