So i just recently started following the YouTube channel and it has given me the inclination to try to build a piece of hardware for myself. I already have a solid machine for daily use so i have decided to try my hand at a NAS. After looking through the interwebs for different builds i seem to have settled on the following Pieces. The only piece i haven't decided on is the motherboard, there is so much going on in the description  i am at a loss as to what i need and what i don't. What i am trying to accomplish is a storage solution for me and family that don't live with me, i want to be able to keep our music, photos, and movies together and have different directories for each person to store important files. So internet access is going to be important. I am leaning towards raid 5 for this set up, but am open to objections  or better solutions. so here is the hardware that i am thinking about. And thanks ahead of time.

------I am planning on 4 of the 3TB HD's------------

Raid 5 would be ok, do you care where you order parts from?

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a Wii and PS2 as your only consoles.

They make other products. That was an example.

He said there would be people from different homes accessing this NAS. Making speed dependent on his internet connection.

Nothing they make is cheep it is all really expensive. The enclose itself costs more then the build I planed out.

Correct and correct. They do make other products but the only ones that i would be able to afford are going to have to few bays. And with the volume of stuff we will be storing i don't want to pay for the web storage option.

Thanks for the build, a few questions. Will i have enough ports on the board? Do you think it is safe to go with the Toshiba drives over WD or Seagate? an extra 100 isn't going to bother me. But thanks for the build. I didn't even know that site existed

yes Toshiba drives should be fine but if you got the money get some WD reds http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd30efrx. the motherboard has 4 ports and has a mini PCIe for a wireless card. also if you need more sata ports you can buy a 1x raid card with 4 ports.

The site is used buy many YouTubers and by everyone on the forum, it is supper helpful.

Depends where you are but you can get a built and good to go unit to just add drives to the HP Microserver G1610T

Usually around the £200 mark and it comes with the RAID /JBOD, ILO, Silent Operation, Low power usage, Headless Operation etc, Worth a shot given that the parts you listed include the processor that is already in the machine (Also upgradeable)

If you are in the uk http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-proliant-microserver-gen8-celeron-dual-core-4gb-110-after-55-cashback-165-serverplus-2396185 but if you arent it gives you an idea .
