Is it still overclockable on H81 motherboards? Going to build my lil bro a cheap gaming PC, so I'm double checking. Thanks! (double checking cause of the skylake non-K overclocking removal)

Yes. It works on H81 mobos. Just check to not upgrade to the latest BIOS because it has a microcode that disables your overclocking from the BIOS.

If he plans on upgrading, go with an i3 haswell or skylake. If not, the Athlon x4 860k is great for intro builds.

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

No problem! If you want any input on a build, let us know!

Intel never officially supported G3258 OC with non Z boards, but they never officially disproved of it  either. In windows 10's early days it contained an intel microcode which prevented G3258 OC on non Z boards, but at the end of november/beginning of december in an windows 10 cumulative update/upgrade Intel modified its microcode to allow it. So yeah it works now. Also OP in case your interested there are also many cheap Z97 motherboards out there as well, like mine, the Asrock Z97-Anniversary Edition, while i did get it at a decent discount i payed for it the amount it would take to buy a H81 board, so it might be worth taking a look at, the extra features and highspeed ram options make it well worth it. Last but not least, some may be tired of seeing me say this, but i will say it every time, i will take the G3258 over any quad AMD any day, in some cases the G3258 may require more tinkering but the overall performance gains in real life applicability is a lot better then what you would get with a quad AMD.

Yup. The G3258 single handedly toppled AMD's low end market. Well for people who plan to play e-sports titles, they can still stick with AMD APUs. I'm just going with a g3250 for my brother. Once Zen is out, he can have my 4460 while having a spare motherboard.

Intel Pentium G3258 $74.41
Intel Pentium G3250 $73.25

Go with the G3258 even if the Processor Get Block in Overclocking and if that happen you still have the same chip.

Just go with a MoBo that is Still Currently Support Overclocking the G3258 (MSI H81M-P33 or if your going to give your brother your i5 4460 go with a good Asus B85M-Gamer) Available to you. Or go with G3250 your choice, Currently a $1.16 price difference in Amazon ill go with it.

I really do like the G3258 for the Purpose of understanding Overclocking in might come of a help in the future when your brother might wanna learn Overclocking.
