PC won't shut off?

This started happening two days ago. I tried turning off my pc by going to windows button, power, shut off. I turned off the monitor, and thinking that it'll turn off, I just went straight to bed. Next day. I still see my computer on, but on sleep mode. I turned on my monitor, and it's on the "loading" screen saying "Shutting off". The only way I could shut it off is by holding down the power button. What could be possible reasons this is happening?

Windows 10

i7-4790

Patriot Viper 3 2x4gb

MSI Guard Pro z97

xfx r9 280 dd

hgst 1tb hdd

No, I had to force it to shut off by holding the power button on my computer.

Hangs like this are super frustrating. Usually I find they're to do with drivers or antivirus software, so that's the first thing to look at - Are there any driver updates available for your motherboard? What security software do you have, if any?

 

It might also be helpful to see what the Event Viewer has to say - Do you remember around what time you told the computer to shut down last night? Launch Event Viewer, then navigate to Windows Logs -> System and see what got logged around that time through to the morning, and for good measure, check the Windows Logs -> Application for the same. That might give some clues as to why Windows was unable to shut down.

Try using disk cleaning software that simply purges backups and things of that nature. 360 total security has a good disk cleaner, I have had this problem and cleaning unused update files and things like that fixed it.
