Do people still need to disk defrag hard drives these days. As some people tell me to and others say do not do it. Will it make my drive brake over time if I was to defrag it like ever month as I do a lot of deleting and installing only sometimes. I mean like big game files. I have a seagate barracuda 2tb with 64MB cache. But my os and programs are on my SSD.

Thank you

Mechanical hard drives still benefit from defragging. You should NEVER try defragging an SSD, instead these need optimising, so basically tells the SSD to TRIM. If you're using windows 10 for instance, when you go into defrag and optimise your drives, it should automatically do the required functions for each. I defrag my 2TB drive maybe once a week, so that it doesn't end up with much more defragging to do at a later date and then take more time doing it.

As others have said defragging magnetic storage (HDDs) is still definitely something that improves performance, however is unnecessary for SSD's.

However, it isn't as big of a deal as it once was. Windows 7 and newer automatically defrags HDDs in the background. It doesn't do the absolute best job, but it usually does a good enough job that it isn't worth the time or effort for most people to do a manual defrag.
