Sounds like some other program is setting it like that.  Did you install anything by accident, like a search toolbar?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

None that I know of. I am pretty careful with what I download, and I uninstalled the most recent things I downloaded

I did that. Thats the issue

Do you happen to have Yahoo Toolbar or Yahoo Messenger installed? Yahoo offers what they call Yahoo Search Protection for those products, which "alerts you if an attempt is made to change your default browser search engine from Yahoo". If you clicked through enabling that by accident, that might explain what's going on here.

I never remember installing/allowing either of those to do anything. How do I turn it off, just in case?

If you have either of them installed, try uninstalling them to see if that's the cause. You should also be able to disable it in the options for those programs, but I'm not seeing any specific info on it other than legalese "Yahoo provides this optional service" pages.

im sure you have tried this but

Three lines on the top right of firefox> options> search> make google primary> uncheck yahoo

close browser. then try again. if that fails you have malware installed in your reg and i recommend running a scan or restoring to a previous point
