I found this on newegg.com... I know it's not an SSD ... but this lot is only $290

GIGABYTE GA-F2A78M-HD2 (rev. 3.0) FM2+ AMD A78 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0
AMD A8-7670K Godavari Quad-Core 3.6 GHz Socket FM2+ 95W
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
WD Blue 1TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5

That'd be a good upgrade, and if its all in working order, a very good deal.

Hello all!

I have two extremely old PC's that have worked relatively well for quite some time. Only recently I lost a PSU and that got me to thinking about upgrading the both of them as best I could with my budget. My budget as of right now is no more than $600. I know that even though my GPU's are ancient, they are the "newest" parts of these builds, so I thought that I'd be ok with updating as much of the other components as I could... but not being so great at this stuff, I figured I'd ask the experts :) I hope to eventually be able to upgrade everything.

So let me give you a list of the parts I have in each machine right now...

PC1:

PSU:  None - This is the one that died, though I will be able to secure an appropriate power supply after I decide what parts I should upgrade.

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P Mobo Reference

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black 3.4ghz CPU Reference

RAM: G.Skill F2-8500CLSD-4GBPK RAM Reference

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 6870 (GV-R6870C) GPU Reference

PC2:

PSU: Corsair CX 430 PSU Reference

Mobo: ECS MCP61PM-HM Rev. 1.0B (This old board came with an HP pc)

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4800+ 2.5ghz CPU Reference

RAM: Samsung PC2 6400U-666-12 2GB RAM Reference

GPU: HIS Radeon HD 5770 H577FL1GD GPU Reference

Any help, reference or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

Hmm, what are you going to be doing with those systems in the future? I'd probably look into upgrading the CPU and motherboard in each of them, perhaps adding an SSD as well.

I wouldn't be embarrassed by them at all, then are still actually quite good for their age (despite not being the top of the range parts of their time).

Sorry I meant to include this info... just got ahead of myself.

Both PC's did ok with the games we have. My son plays Minecraft, Blade and Soul, and a few things like that. I do a little gaming but most of my time is spent in unity or blender. I would like to try and do both so that we are not fighting over the machines when he's home from school.

Well at the moment Phenom II are still quite good, and they along with their motherboard are relatively inexpensive on Ebay. And the Phenom II actually work in every AM3+ motherboard right up until the latest ones, so you can also get all of the modern features as well. For what you and your son are doing, you really don't need to spend money on the latest components.

Yeah I know I'm not going to get much for my budget, but I was just thinking of a bit of a performance increase. What if I was to simply update the ram on PC1, and the mobo, cpu and ram on PC2... hmmm.

On another note, the faster the RAM, the better the APU will handle games and anything that requires use of the iGPU.
