Nas OS?

I have been using OpenMediaVault for a little while now, and honestly have had issues with it. I know EVERYONE uses freenas, which I am not opposed to, I just want to know if anyone has any other recommendations, including paid OS options. 

 

My use case is a 16+ TB software RAID 6 system. Right now openmediavault is going to be an issue as it seems there is a 16 TB limit on its ext4, and right now I "only" have a 7x3 TB RAID 6 array, with only about 9 TB of data on it, which is small enough to offload to other drives as I rebuild a new solution (going to freenas or probably another OS would require a different file system thus killing all the data on the drives). I need to do this soon as I can actually offload the data as I migrate to a new OS. Besides freenas, are there any other great options? I am not looking for windows or linux (ubuntu or server editions of anything). I need software raid, SFTP, user accounts, all that fun stuff.

what would be the benefit from that? I am not familiar with Synology at all.

have a look at the Synology website, they make  the best NAS solutions, but is good because of the software not the hardware... If you Google "roll your own Synology" for more details...

Just go with FreeNAS, there is a lot of support out there for FreeNAS, what not always can be said about other OS's, like Synology OS.

 

O. support is nice. Like for instance right now on openmediavault, for no apparently reason AT ALL, sftp doesn't work on boot. I have to plug it into a monitor and restart it via root and then for some reason sftp service will start. So support is a nice thing to have :)

 

Is there no benefit to synology over freenas? I just don't want to end up with the "wrong" OS. Although it does look like freenas is the preferred OS.
