Hi guys,

I've been scratching my head with the computer of a friend. I chose the hardware for him and his brother built it. Here is the list :

  • Z170 ASUS Pro Gaming
  • Intel 6600K @ stock
  • 16 Go DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 2133 Mhz
  • ASUS GTX 970 Strix
  • Corsair RMx650
  • FD Define R4

He is running Windows 10 but we tried also with Windows 7 and it's the same : whenever he's playing LoL, he get sudden quick frame drops randomly. It goes from 60 FPS stable to 20-24 for less than 1 sec and then back to 60 which causes him troubles when in "dangerous LoL stuff" because the game freezes for that time.

That's the list of what we tried :

  • We have tried Windows 7, same problem.
  • We have swapped graphic cards, the 970 worked fine in another computer, but his computer kept the frame drop with another GC.
  • We tried disabling Intel Speedstep, nothing changed.
  • We checked temperatures, they are super ok.
  • Running AIDA64 stress didn't cause any problems.
  • Updating the BIOS, nothing changed.

Right now, I just told him that he might have to return CPU+ MB and hope they find something like bad PCI-E. But because he doesn't play a lot of games, it's hard to tell if it's like bad LoL+Drivers combo or something like that.

One interesting thing is that he told me that when the computer was working only with integrated graphics, it was ok, but maybe it was just luck.

Any ideas ?

Gaming: Windows 10 - Intel i7 9900K - Asus RTX 2080 Strix OC - GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS MASTER - O11 Dynamic

I tried that the first time we checked and I didn't saw any high temps or particular pattern when the drop occurred. He was playing and I was watching the values. Maybe I missed something but he has no OC on the CPU and the 212 EVO is more than enough (he has a Define R4 case, so good case and airflow).

Is it only when he dies in LoL it drops? That's what I'm assuming from "dangerous LoL stuff". If so, I'm pretty sure it's normal because it happens to me.

  • 4 weeks later...

He tried to play Smite recently, he told me he had drops too. I haven't heard about offline games, but his brother is on the same connection and has no problems. Could still be a network problem only happening in his room, I don't know.

For the "dangerous LoL stuff" it means that this quick drop is annoying when in team fights because it can decide between escaping or dying. Also sometimes it happens right under a tower and makes him take a hit because this second lost was the time to back up.
