Ammo Can Build MOBO (Green/Black Theme)

  1. 1. What Z170 Mini ITX MOBO would you recommend?

    • EVGA Z170 Stinger
      2
    • ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Impact (Painting over the red parts)

Hi all,

I'm building a Mini ITX gaming rig inside a Fat Fifty Ammo Can. Hopefully it turns out pretty good, I'll share photos once it is finished. What I need help with is part suggestions. Here is what I have so far:

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/tyrelolsen/saved/

CPU: i7-6700k

CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 Liquid CFM Cooler (will this be enough cooling to overclock? The case will have pretty good airflow hopefully.)

MOBO: EVGA Z170 Stinger or ASUS ROG Maximus Mini ITX

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3000MHz

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD (Boot Drive)

Storage: WD Black 1TB

PSU: Silverstone Strider Gold 550W 80+ Gold

GPU: Undecided, need suggestions (will likely be using a PCI-E extender so I can run the card Vertical instead of Horizontal to show off the top/save space in the case. Any suggestions on a good quality brand?)

The most urgent item I have to decide on is the MOBO so I can start cutting/building the case. Will it be okay to paint over the red parts of the ASUS mobo? I'm hesitant to use an EVGA board.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I use a h60 on an i7.. I don't recommend it for overclocking.  If there's not room for a 240 cooler I would stick to air, if you want to overclock that is.

For the gpu, really just get whatever you want, be it a 970, 390, 980ti.. whatever it is, just get something with an aftermarket(non reference) cooler.  I would pick whatever matches your colour scheme.

As for motherboard painting, I do believe Linus has a video on this subject if you're uncomfortable with it.

i thought about doing an ammo can build when i was at an army supply store a while back but decided not to. it will be interesting to see how this turns out. also to answer your question i would not advise painting a motherboard unless your sure you can take the covers off and put them back on i cant tell if they are easily removable.  but the evga stinger is a good motherboard. the only issue i can see you running into is mounting the gpu. also why do you need a suggestion on a case just curious as your using the ammo can?

wait your using a .50 cal ammo can? you gotta make some custom fabricated motherboard mount so you dont short the board out as the whole can is made of metal

wait if the OP is gonna cut holes for the rear IO on the ammo can then why doesnt he just cut a 2 slot hole also and then mount a blower style card so all the hot air is being pushed out of the case.

OP can do whatever he likes, but to me venting every bit of hot air out of your case through only your video card sounds like a bad idea.

you do realize he can just install motherboard standoff screws right?

true but how would a aftermarket card's cooler be more efficient than the blower refrence card in such a small and confined space?

or that too it can work as well. there are many ways to do this because he isnt restricted to a prefabricated chassis

also for your gpu suggestion i would use a evga hybrid series card (which ever one you wanted) that way you dont have a ton of extra heat inside the small space

Ill see if the bigger cooler can be worked in somehow, I would like to vent the heat out of the case to keep the temps down. Thank you for giving me that video link. I've been going back through his videos there are just so many that I missed it.

I've got a solution for that as well as cable management (bit better than just installing standoff acrews hopefully,) I'll be sure to post pictures later.

I will look in to those, the GPU in my current PC is from EVGA and they were great to work with when the first one I got was a dud.

ya check out the hybrid series they have the same size radiator as the h60 and your gpu tends to get hotter than a cpu anyway
