Posted February 16, 2016 Hi all, I'm building a Mini ITX gaming rig inside a Fat Fifty Ammo Can. Hopefully it turns out pretty good, I'll share photos once it is finished. What I need help with is part suggestions. Here is what I have so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/tyrelolsen/saved/ CPU: i7-6700k CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 Liquid CFM Cooler (will this be enough cooling to overclock? The case will have pretty good airflow hopefully.) MOBO: EVGA Z170 Stinger or ASUS ROG Maximus Mini ITX RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3000MHz Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD (Boot Drive) Storage: WD Black 1TB PSU: Silverstone Strider Gold 550W 80+ Gold GPU: Undecided, need suggestions (will likely be using a PCI-E extender so I can run the card Vertical instead of Horizontal to show off the top/save space in the case. Any suggestions on a good quality brand?) The most urgent item I have to decide on is the MOBO so I can start cutting/building the case. Will it be okay to paint over the red parts of the ASUS mobo? I'm hesitant to use an EVGA board. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you! Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/548688-ammo-can-build/ Share on other sites
 Posted February 16, 2016 I use a h60 on an i7.. I don't recommend it for overclocking. If there's not room for a 240 cooler I would stick to air, if you want to overclock that is. For the gpu, really just get whatever you want, be it a 970, 390, 980ti.. whatever it is, just get something with an aftermarket(non reference) cooler. I would pick whatever matches your colour scheme. As for motherboard painting, I do believe Linus has a video on this subject if you're uncomfortable with it. edit: my work in progress i5 6600k // 16gb g.skill ddr4 3000 // evga gtx 980 custom water loop Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/548688-ammo-can-build/#findComment-7247402 Share on other sites
 Posted February 16, 2016 i thought about doing an ammo can build when i was at an army supply store a while back but decided not to. it will be interesting to see how this turns out. also to answer your question i would not advise painting a motherboard unless your sure you can take the covers off and put them back on i cant tell if they are easily removable. but the evga stinger is a good motherboard. the only issue i can see you running into is mounting the gpu. also why do you need a suggestion on a case just curious as your using the ammo can? Project Iridium: CPU: Intel 4820K CPU Cooler: Custom Loop Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Black Edition RAM: Avexir Blitz Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD and Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD GPU: Asus 780 6GB Strix Case: IN WIN 909 PSU: Corsair RM1000 Project Iridium build log http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/451088-project-iridium-build-log/ Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/548688-ammo-can-build/#findComment-7247406 Share on other sites
 Posted February 16, 2016 wait your using a .50 cal ammo can? you gotta make some custom fabricated motherboard mount so you dont short the board out as the whole can is made of metal "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. OP can do whatever he likes, but to me venting every bit of hot air out of your case through only your video card sounds like a bad idea. my work in progress i5 6600k // 16gb g.skill ddr4 3000 // evga gtx 980 custom water loop Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/548688-ammo-can-build/#findComment-7247434 Share on other sites
 Posted February 16, 2016 also for your gpu suggestion i would use a evga hybrid series card (which ever one you wanted) that way you dont have a ton of extra heat inside the small space Project Iridium: CPU: Intel 4820K CPU Cooler: Custom Loop Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Black Edition RAM: Avexir Blitz Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD and Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD GPU: Asus 780 6GB Strix Case: IN WIN 909 PSU: Corsair RM1000 Project Iridium build log http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/451088-project-iridium-build-log/ Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/548688-ammo-can-build/#findComment-7247456 Share on other sites
 Thank you for giving me that video link. I've been going back through his videos there are just so many that I missed it. 5 hours ago, Maybach123 said: i thought about doing an ammo can build when i was at an army supply store a while back but decided not to. it will be interesting to see how this turns out. also to answer your question i would not advise painting a motherboard unless your sure you can take the covers off and put them back on i cant tell if they are easily removable. but the evga stinger is a good motherboard. the only issue i can see you running into is mounting the gpu. also why do you need a suggestion on a case just curious as your using the ammo can?
