Hello all.  When heavy gaming on my computer, I smell something "warm" or a slight burning smell coming from my PC case.  I look at the temperatures of my cpu, ram, gpu, drives... etc and they're all within low-medium.  Less than 40 degrees on everything.

I even opened my case and touched the cpu heatsink, gpu heatsink, ram, HD... every component and everything is barely warm.  All fans are spinning fine and whisper quiet.  What could it be?

4690K

8gb ram

GTX 960 2gb

ssd

Antec 900

Coolermaster 500 watt psu

My guess is it could either be my gpu or psu.  However, gpus usually start to stutter, artifact or games crash when they get too hot.  None of that is happening.  I don't know if it's my PSU.  The game doesn't crash and PC doesn't reboot when a gpu intensive game starts.

That smell bothers me.

if your pc is a bit dusty it can smell like that cus of it.

I'll dust my case and do just that.

However, I think it may be my PSU because I only smell that burning sensation when heavy gaming.

I'm going with the R9 390 on my next upgrade.  Since I'll be replacing my PSU, what do you think of this:

I really want to spend as little as possible but not get a PSU that will blow up.

I recommend a 80+ gold

its only a bit more and majorly increases efficiency.

What is your power requirements?

I suggest you get a PSU that allows your system to a draw whats it needs at normal/idle use to be 45-55%  of the available power and heavy use to be at 65-80% of available power to keep your PSU at peak performance. Please dont go cheap on your PSU its the most critical part of your machine. ^_^

I suggest Seasonic, EVGA, BeQuiet! or Corsair brands. (Go Seasonic)

Right now my requirements isn't that high.  I've had the same Coolermaster 500 watt psu for about 7 years now.

Like I said earlier, I would like to replace my GTX 960 with a 390 in the next month or so.  I think it might be time for me to get a new PSU.
