Sudden freezes (v5.0)

Go to solution Solved by NeoFrux,

I'm not so sure this is an "AMD sucks" thing, but it might be an "FM2 sucks" thing. I tried looking up the "MSI F2A78M-HD2", but the model is a Gigabyte one. Have you tried updating to the latest F3d BIOS? Are you overclocking at all? If so, you might want to dial it back to default / clear the CMOS and see if that helps. I'd also recommend running a couple of passes of memtest86+ if you haven't already to rule out memory / memory controller issues. If you do end up getting any errors or the test crashes, you might want to turn off XMP if it's enabled, or bump the voltage slightly to see if that's the issue. I've seen FM2-based systems develop memory problems over time due to the memory controllers generally being less robust than most other sockets, and I don't know exactly if it's because of loosening voltage regulation or what, but bumping the voltage or dropping XMP seems to resolve it, at least in the short term. As I've said in other threads, be careful about applying more voltage to the RAM or IMC; You don't want to make the problem worse. A few points upward should be within tolerance though, and it might make the difference.

Solution:

Updating bios to latest version

thanks to Runefox!

Hello,

I'll get right down to it:

Symptoms:

  • Sudden freeze
  • everything stops
  • fans and hdd slow down to idle
  • primary monitor freezes on last frame
  • PC is completely unresponsive

known causes:

  • games (Smite, in particular)

This is the 5th time I have made this thread, so the other previous threads might contain some useful info.

PC specs can be found on my profile

here are some conclusions that I have reached thus far:

  • HDD is not involved
  • most likely psu/cpu
  • not temperature related
  • my threads always die in a few days.

Thanks in advance for your help

Your more than likely taxing your system more than its able to handle.

I can tell you that its not the PSU as if it were the system would shutoff instead of go unresponsive.

And can you link the other threads?

Pretty sure a 970 can handle smite

It very well may be the CPU, and i say that because i cant find any reason why it should be doing that, as your power supply is providing enough power to support all the hardware, id also recommend switching over to a intel CPU for better reliability

I would, but I don't really have the cash. Is there anyway to make sure? because I cant go buying new components willy nilly

The issue is that it would crash before you could verify it, but if you can, id say try this

Did you do the torture test? Its shows what you need to do for the torture test

that was the torture test

options > torture test

It probably lasted 12-3 minutes with the torture test, as I was downloading it and setting up an account for a bit.

It honestly looks like it didnt finish

That's what I thought, but what does that mean in terms of which component is faulty?

Edit: It didn't finish, I took this photo when it had crashed, as you can see in the task manager, it had an uptime of 18 minutes.

It all comes down to what I've always thought, that AMD CPU's suck, which means you'll need to switch to a intel CPU and a motherboard that supports intel CPU, and there are other people who have had issues with AMD CPU's, i have had a laptop that does this kind of issue, to my brothers desktop doing random shutoffs

If you must switch, ill recommend you use the following key finder app, incase you don't have a windows product key available

What about FM2+? Appel's cpu is a a10 7850k, and while you can use a FM2 in a FM2+ if the cpu is a FM2+ and the motherboard is a FM2 socket would it cause this kind of issue?

The motherboard is FM2+, too. It would make a difference if it weren't, but I'm mostly talking about the FMx sockets in general.

hi, thanks for the thoughtful answer,

I will update the Bios, and I did overclock my cpu It once, but I'm pretty sure I returned it to stock afterwards. Ill also have a look at the ram voltages.

thanks again.

edit

The Bios update seems to have done something, as it has been stable for about 1 hour now, I will update this if anything happens.

Managed to run Prime95 for over an hour now, and that is good enough for me!

Awesome, hopefully the BIOS update was all you needed. Fingers crossed that it remains stable!
