Depends on the mobo. If you have a Z97, go for it.

@HKZeroFive Yeah I have a Z97, I should upgrade to I7 4790k?

I would.

You'll see a minimal improvement with Skylake and the cost associated with it makes the upgrade unjustifiable for me. The i7 4790K is an excellent CPU.

@HKZeroFive Even for the future proofing?

The i7 4790K will still last for a long time. There's no immediate disadvantage with DDR3 in comparison to DDR4. Look at Sandy Bridge from 2011, it's still going strong.

Do you even have a use for the extra threads the i7 provides? If yes, then dont even think about a 6700k, go straight to the similarly priced 5820k. Otherwise, stick to your current cpu.

Should I buy a LGA1155 MOBO Tommorow and buy DDR4 ram and i7 6700k in a few months or should i upgrade to an I7 4790k tomorrow. I have a GTX 970, I5 4590, and 8gb g.skill

i7 4790k is a great CPU you will not face any problem in future also. Weather you will upgrade to new Gen is totally depends on you, weather you need i7 right now or you can wait for your PC for some time , and do you really feel to use your money on latest gen PC. If you are talking about performance there is no monster increase in performance but what i can say latest architecture is always better than old. About i7 4790k i can assure you that it will not show any issue like bottleneck or something else with upcoming peripherals. One thing if you are going to buy k series CPU always buy Z or X (5th gen) series chip set only.

Now about new MOBO : Don't buy old MOBO, LGA 1155 has chip set like h61 or Z77 this are made to support 3rd and 2nd gen CPU. If you are going to buy new MOBO go for 6th gen
