Internet slower on desktop

Hi.

 

Why is my wifi slower on my main desktop than on my macbook or other dell laptop? I had a wireless usb receiver, though the drivers were a pain to install so I decided to use a wifi extender and connect an ethernet cable to my pc instead. However my speeds are two times slower than on my macbook. I would want to use ethernet, though there isn't an option to do that at my home. Maybe I need drivers or??

The usb dongle could just be slower than the integrated wifi solution of your other devices.

What is your normal speed vs the speed on your desktop.

Thanks for replying. Maybe it wasn't clear though I am using a wifi extender which is connected to my computer now via an ethernet cable.

I am supposed to receive 100 megabits a second and I get around 70-90 on my mac and 10-30 on my desktop.

Most wifi extenders suck. 

 

So it's probably limiting your speed just as much as the USB dongle you were using. I would suggest going with a PCIE wifi solution instead if you need your desktop on wifi.

Then the speed is being limited by the link between the wifi extender and your router. Or between the extender and the pc, depending what speed the port is on the extender.

its definitely the wifi extender, they aren't too good and wouldn't provide a real wired connection, you'd be better off getting a good wireless NIC or plugg in directly into the router

There's nothing wrong with 2.4ghz, and if he's already having signal issues, then 5ghz may be an even worse idea as the signal penetration of 5ghz is abysmal compared to 2.4ghz.
