No impact on modern HDDs.

Older (we're talking 20-ish+) drives sometimes had problems when not horizontal, but modern ones don't really care about orientation. Unless they're running while changing orientation.

Hey there 7850OC,

As the guys pointed out, the positioning of the drive has little to none effect on modern drives. It is recommended to mount them properly in their drive slots in the case which usually is horizontally. The biggest difference might be the way the drive is cooled since cases are designed to have airflow that goes through drives that are mounted horizontally. This can also influence the noise that the drive generates as these drive cages and mounts are designed to lower any resonation or excessive noise.

Put in a few words - I would recommend to put them in a horizontal position, but it shouldn't kill a drive if it works vertically. :)

hard drive platters are usually balanced enough that when spinning they create their own centripetal force, which keeps them steady regardless of their position. The only trouble you'd ever have is if you reorient the drive while it's powered on, which can cause head crashes - which may damage or kill your drive.

Think of one of those science museum things, where you have the spinning bike tyre. If you hold it spinning in one place then nothing will happen. If you tilt it while spinning, it'll try pulling you around with it. It's the same sort of idea.
