Windows Professional and Ultimate Versions : How on Earth are they different?!

I know of their minor differences, but is there any use of them, for a regular power-user like me?

for a regular user, no. thats why most oem pc's already come with home/premium versions of windows. for everyone else there is professional.

I've got Professional because the key was cheap on G2A but I can't notice any difference between my desktop and my mum's laptop (running home).

If you're only a home user, go with home premium. On a business environment, you need enterprise or pro/ultimate.

Ultimate was discontinued after 7. But for Seven and Vista, Ultimate was the consumer equivalent of Enterprise containing all possible features. Enterprise was the version above Professional and a bit of an exclusive as it wasn't even available for all businesses. Professional you could just get in a store but for Enterprise you need to apply and be accepted for a special program called Microsoft Software Assurance.

Both Ultimate and Enterprise and no other versions came with Bitlocker (low level encryption for hard drives) and Multilingual User Interface (basically all possible languages made available). Both very useful in high-tier professional environments with hundreds or thousands of client machines but barely even necessary for home or even small business users. 

At home, you can do 99% of everything with Home versions of Windows. Pro is useful if you want to log into your own domain. Which some home users want to do but again, 99% of them don't.

That are locked out of Windows Professional you mean. I upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium to Pro straight after installing it with my OEM Win 7 Home disc, only a few KB of my internet quota was used to verify the key and I had Windows 7 Pro.

I've always used Win 7 Ultimate since we got it for free and didn't mind having extra features, even though I barely used them

Go through the article and decide yourself. If you really want the specific features mentioned in the article, you can go for windows professional or ultimate editions.
