So in the past month I've upgraded my pc a lot (i'd say) I've gone from a:

i5 4460 to a i7 4790k
zotac gtx 970 to a evga 980ti
and a non modular 500w psu to a EVGA SuperNova 750w fully modular psu
all but the 980ti was bought brand new from amazon

The psu and gpu was installed 3 weeks ago no problems, worked first time.
Today I installed my i7 which I followed the intel instructions to replace my i5 and it's cooler with the i7 and the intel cooler from it's box.
I used the thermal paste which was already on the cooler/heat sync (from intel box) and put it in as told in instructions (which I understood).
Next all was in, turned it on for the first time then in turned off during the windows 10 logo. I took off the heat sync to have a look for any mistakes , there was none I could see, turned it on again worked fine for hours with games and every day non demanding tasks. But it was fine up until I plugged in my tv as a second screen (as I prefer some games on the bigger screen). It was very slow for a bit just using chrome and skype then it proceeded to turn off without warning before any youtube video could load (not normal).I turn it straight on again but with one monitor, as I was in a skype call I wanted to get back to it and about 4 minutes in after logging in it shuts off, again without warning. So I investigated how long does it take to shut off without logging in? It was fine for 20 minutes so I logged on and again 4 mins past it shuts off.

I could only think two thing that might be the cause this:
Over heating? Shouldn't be as all my fans work inc the new cpu fan and have a cold room.
Power? 750w should be enough as ive only added a new gpu and cpu with a 250w upgrade.

If any concern my next upgrade (a week maybe) will be
8gb more ram (from 8 to 16)
internal LEDs
maybe a ssd or another hdd as my 2tb hdd is full but may be too much money considering the i7, 980ti and psu.

Current pc specs (just to add this is from memory):

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 Rev 2.0
Ram: 8gb Crucial 1GX64 DDR3 1600 UDIMM 240-
Cpu: i7 4790k with stock fan
Gpu: Evga GTX 980Ti SC With custom overclock (stable)

Hard Drive: I think WD 2TB but either way it's 2tb
Some DVD Drive
PSU:Evga 750w Fully modular SuperNova 80+Gold

Cheers for reading and ask if you need or ive missed anything.

1. It could be other things than just the CPU being defective.

2. You sure the OC on the 980ti is stable? Have you ran your computer without an OC? I had a wierd problem with my second 290x liking the 1150/1350 OC underload but not when it's idling...

3. Maybe your hard drive decided to quit

4. Maybe your new PSU is defective, Maybe you've forgotten to plug in the 8-pin cpu cable or not properly plugged in one of the cables going to your motherboard/GPU

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Clear the CMOS, try booting without the GPU and use the integrated graphics. Start with the basics when troubleshooting instability.

It was stable in games as I had to turn it down from +150 to +50 just for gta 5 to run stably,so ill run it at stock and see if it shuts down.

So i put it back in and i think the cause is msi afterburner applying the overclock because when i gave it admin privrilages it shut off a second later. But why would this be as the only thing i changed is the i5 to the i7?

Try this, no clue if it will work with you.

When your computer crashes does it turn to a black screen? Or some other colour?

If so, press the Windows key. Then Right arrow and then Enter (That should click the shut down button)

Wait a few seconds. Does your computer turn off normally?

If so then it's a GPU problem. Could be hardware or software related. It gives us a starting point.

Also, as others have said, run it with out any overclocks for a while, not minutes or hours. Try a day or two.

If it works flawlessly then you'll just have to restart your overclocks from the beginning.

It's not a race to the bottom.

It just turns off instantly no crash or freeze.

Im in the middle of it now and my idle cpu temp in the bios menu is 91'C isn't that very high? If so then that must be overheating and shutting down.

Check your CPU cooler. That's far too high.

This could either point towards the cooler, but could also be the bios. Most if not all motherboards needed a bios upgrade to fully support the Haswell refresh.

It's not a race to the bottom.

So I'm updating the bios now and it's been erasing, writing and verifying for an hour now with power cycles. How long does it take to update? as it just looks to be repeating.

Ok so i've got it working for now but im using HWMonitor and it says cpu temps are 98'C-100'C so im guessing that's my problem. What should I do now?

Erase, write, verify. Power cycle and done. Only need to do it once.

Yes you've been doing it over and over. At least you know it works.

The bios still states 91C?

Ok, does the temps change depending on your load or does it always sit at a specific number all the way through?

Open up Aida 64 and see if your CPU throttles under a stress test.

Hold your hand near the CPU cooler while it's working. (Don't touch it) do you feel a massive amount of heat? At 90+C you should be able to feel the heat no problem.

What volts is your CPU using?

Try another CPU cooler (like your i5 cooler as they are the same)

Let me know.

It's not a race to the bottom.
