Does anyone have an idea of how to do it or have done it before without using the overpriced bootcamp option?

I did this on my macbook pro running Yosemite and Mavericks, haven't tried on El Capitan but there isn't a reason it shouldn't work.

Use drive utility to partition part of your drive as NTFS

Create a Windows install USB (Unetbootin is the mac tool for this once you have the ISO.)

Shut your mac all the way down

Press and hold option until you see the choice to select a drive. (there should be at least three: Your Macintosh HD drive, the empty windows drive (Usually something like NTFS) and your boot USB)

Select the boot USB and install windows on the empty partition.

Enjoy!
